megan mcgrath joins us on the scene. megan? >> reporter: pretty frightening way for people to wake up this morning. take a look at the apartment building behind me on rahm street in northeast. the upper level, the windows are broken out. you can see the damage in the ceiling in the upper rooms. the fire was basically contained to the upper portion in the roof area. early this morning, many of the residents here were actually asleep in their beds when they realized that the building was on fire. we're hearing that neighbors helped neighbors, banged on doors to alert everyone and make sure people got out okay. everyone did get out okay but there is damage to the building. folks have been told they need to go elsewhere until they can assess the situation and give the a all clear to go inside. jean wright was sleeping when this happened and one of her neighbors banged on the doors. >> i was sleeping. and my neighbors over top of me, her daughter came down and knocked on my side door from the kitchen and told me fire, the the buildi

megan mcgrath is live with a look at what crews are doing right now. megan, what's happening? >> reporter: this is a 10-inch water main that blew. crews are on the scene, pumping water out of the hole. i'm told this is going to be with us several hours. so throughout the morning rush hour this morning. this is actually in the dedicated lane there, the turn lane from southbound georgia avenue to take the right-hand turn on to inbound connecticut avenue. so southbound connecticut avenue. that dedicated turn lane is now completely closed. instead of being able to come down georgia avenue and take the right-hand turn on connecticut prior to the light, you're going to have to go down to the light and take a hard right at the light. this is going to mean that we're going to start to see things backing up. you can't take that turn without sitting at the light. that's going to cause problems here this morning. we're talk thing about several hours before this reopens. this is aspen hill. if you travel through here, keep in mind it may take you a little longer. connecticut avenue is ope

joining us tonight sylvia maxwell, megan mcginnis and kelly van leewen. sylvia, your bus got stranded. walk us through what happened. >> so we left at 10:00 and we got stranded around 2:00. i was asleep at the moment so when we woke up, when i woke up, everyone was like, oh, we're not moving. the snow -- there was an accident and we're just stuck. so i was like okay, i'm just going back to sleep because we're in western new york. we have snow all the time so this is not a big deal. so i go to sleep, wake up in a couple of hours and we're still sitting there. i'm just like, okay, we're not moving. and we just sit there. we're trying to be positive. we just, you know, singing songs, playing games. we notice a few more hours go by. we're just like, okay, we're really not going anywhere. so we ended up staying the night on the bus. that's when we woke up and realized that we were really stranded there. >> megan, were people panicking at all? >> no, we stayed really calm. i know that a lot of people were in a lot more danger than us so our coaches kept us real

megan mcgrath, news 4. >> we do continue our team coverage this morning with news 4's derrick ward. >> live in southeast d.c. at union temple baptist church where they plan to continue a thanksgiving tradition near to bury's heart. >> reporter: good morning. that tradition will be carried on this tuesday. that is the tradition where marion barry hands out turkeys to folks here, thousands of turkeys. it's a community event, but it's just going to be part of a whole week and a long period of remembrance, i would imagine for marion barry. here outside union temple in ward 8, the heart of marion barry's constituency. we spoke to reverend wilson who was with barry when he passed away. take a look at the scene inside the church. they had a traditional ceremony, a pouring of libations, african-themed ceremony at the beginning of the early morning service. we spoke to parishioners as they came here, and the word started to spread about barry's passing. despite his recent health problems, as you said, everyone thought he would bounce back and that came as a surprise. among the folks we spoke t
