because i don't think a lot of people realize that before we had nate parker the actor, we had nate parker the computer programmer. >> that is correct. >> how do you go from coding to acting? >> i was dating a girl who was a model and she had to go to dallas and a guy walks up to me and is like are you in the program. i'm like no, not at all. he's like we don't have many actors in hollywood and i would love to have you read this monologue. >> you believed him? >> i just didn't want to be a programmer. it was one of those things it was like i'll try it. why not? what's the worst can happen? i read these lines and try to be an actor and see what happens. i called home and said mom i think i'm going to try this. she's like you got your degree. >> what happened next sounds like an old fashioned hog wolly discovery. his first acting job in three months and one role that changed his life. >> it was my first big role. i had to do research. all of a sudden i started to -- i came in contact with my identity and who i was. the acting thing started to shrink and the activism thing started to grow. it
