to what extent do you think is the pakistan government willing to support the new afghanistan government? >> reporter: well, pakistan has assured the afghans that they will be more cooperation from pakistan that, they had a common enemy to deal with and that was extremism. they wanted to build corridors to afghanistan, so importantly the big challenge right now was for afghanistan to get some sort of cooperation from pakistan. the pakistanis are promising for the first time this appears to be a breakthrough visit because as i mentioned to you, he is widely respected in this country, how have, a lot will depend on what transpires inside of afghanistan because you still have the taliban threat, they control a wide stretch of the territory there. so for the first time the pakistanis are saying we are willing to cooperate, the pakistanis are even offering the afghan i'm training in pakistan. and also want to enhance economic cooperation. they have signed mous and the afghan president was very upbeat. he said he want to take the trade between the two country to his $5 billion instead of the 2

there are less american news networks in afghanistan. there are still print journalists there. they are scaling down as well. so the fear is they will be completely abandoned. but that being said, you know the nato coalition countries said they will not abandon afghanistan. what we are seeing from the u.s. is although we are scaling down troop levels to around 10,000 by the end of the year and the start of the new year we might have 1,000 more than that. from what it seems to be with the new afghanistan president there will be a good relationship with the international community. he's already approved more of an effort by u.s. forces in afghanistan beyond training and assisting. >> what's interesting there, there's been talk for a while that the only way the government can hold onto power is if they bring in the taliban in come capacity. is there a way to coit without returning to the dark ages of the late 1990s? >> a lot of afghanistan officials will tell you there is a way of doing that. there's more factors. it's not as easy as just talking to the taliban. this isn't the tal

troops in afghanistan will be allowed to target taliban fighters next year under new guidelines approved by the u.s. president and originally the role had been limited to tackling al-qaeda and training afghan troops. charles stratford has more from kabul. >> reporter: voting for the go ahead of both the security arrangements one with u.s. and nato forces and comes at a time where president obama has an expansion of the role of troops that will remain here to train the afghan military. the exact details of what, in fact, these troop also be doing remains unclear but it certainly comes at a time where afghan forces are struggling to meet the taliban threat. we have seen a different strategy used by taliban in resent months and sometimes 400 taliban fighters targets the south and east of the country and three big attacks here in kabul in the last couple of weeks and also draws into question more efforts that are being made in terms of the diplomacy on international level and trying to bring the taliban to peace talks and trying to initiate some sort of truce. we had president ghani in saudi
