peggy fox is in sterling. what are you hearing right now? >> well, you know, both sides say they are confident. this is a republican leaning district, but the demographics are changing. we are seeing more and more democrats in the 10th district. so we don't know how it's going to shake out. there has been no independent polling done in this race. people think it's going to be tight. but you know, something for all virginiaens voting today. take a look at the polls. everybody had to present a photo id. officials tell me that went pretty well. now we do think the comstock, foust race did drive more voters to the polls and at a couple of the precincts, we found some of the sons of both of the candidates. foust and comstock. >> is this something you thought maybe she was december tin the for a long time ago or has it been a gradual thing? >> i do not think that she was destined to ever do this. i think when she expressed interest in first running for delegate in 2009, i thought it made some sense. and so, you know, when she decided to run for co

that's where we find peggy fox live now with the latest. what happened, peg? >> reporter: well, prince george's county police do not confirm that it was the son who allegedly shot his mother, but people close to the investigation say that's exactly what happened. it also started here at these apartments on prince place near prince george's county community college. it happened around 12:30 and why would a son shoot his mother? neighbors here say they have no idea, but they do tell us the woman shot was extremely friendly and talkative. they did not see the son very much. that 911 call went out, police came and witnesses say that the suspect was visibly upset and was sick to his stomach. >> when they arrived on scene, they discovered a victim suffering from apparent gunshot wound. that victim was transported to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. after a brief canvas of the area the suspect was apprehended, taken into custody. >> reporter: they caught the suspect about a 1/4-mile away from the shooting scene near the grounds of prince george's cou

i'm peggy fox. back to you. >> we know of course for every candidate raising their arms in victory, there is another one giving the sad concession speech. mola lenghi is tracking them down in dulles. >> reporter: expected to be one of the tightest races in the country, but it didn't seem to work out that way. i spoke to a lot of people going into tonight, a lot of them seemed hopeful but not so much confident as they hoped for. it was a tough year for democrats across the country. the campaign says they'll spend the next few weeks and months analyzing what cost john foust this race. he outspent barbara comstock. there was a comment made about comstock never having a real job, which she pounced on for the remainder of the campaign and the foust campaign insists it was taken out of context. many people point to that as a turning point in this contest. or perhaps many people suggest 2014 seems to be the republican year. in concession, foust wished comstock the best of luck in congress and said he would

. >> peggy fox is live in fairfax where the vote canvassing has begun. >> reporter: across the state more than 2 million votes were cast in this race. warner has about 12,000 more votes than ed gillespie, less than 1% and within a possible recount, but some elections experts believe warner's lead will increase because of provisional ballots. here at fairfax county 507 people cast provisional ballots. 100 were people that did not have proper photo id. experts believe these provisional ballots tend to lean democratic. when and if those people come in to prove their votes should count, like five people did today, their votes are going to count. >> we take additional security precautions. >> reporter: a guard stood watch over fairfax county's vote tallies as canvassing began for yet another razor thin election. >> we do this every year every election. >> reporter: once again just like last year's attorney general race where mark herring squeezed out the win, lawyers are scrutinizing the tallies in the virginia senate race. >> it's the tiny transcription and arithmetic errors that a 15, 1

as peggy fox reports, while outrage continues, there is hope for change. >> reporter: the alleged gang rape happened in the fraternity house behind me. now all activities at all greek organizations are suspended until january 9th. anger erupted into weekend protests at uva after a rolling stone magazine article described a student's account of being gang raped in the phi kappa psi fraternity house. >> there's nothing that we can do more than raise awareness. >> reporter: faculty members also protested. what do you want the university to do? >> because this is university respecting the honor system and we are not allowing students to cheat or copy and we are allowing that these things happen in the fraternities is totally shocking. >> reporter: the article depicted the victim's frustration as trying to make her alleged attackers accountable. >> we are definitely disappointed in the administration's handling of this thus far, but we see this as an opportunity for the administration to step up and create a policy that creates the strongest support system possible for survivors. >> reporte
