first of all, does takata have its arms wrapped around the problem? probably not because they are still looking for the root cause of the problem with these air bags. secondly, at what point do the recalls have an impact on people's confidence in the vehicles they are driving? we are talking about driver's side air bags that are faulty here. tomorrow a lot of these questions will be answered in washington when takata executives or at least one executive as well as executives from auto makers and the highway national traffic safety administration will be testifying on capitol hill about what is happening with these takata air bags. >> how easy a fix is it on these air bags or do you know? >> reporter: it's not an easy fix from this standpoint. it's the air bag inflater that is the problem. they are not sure why the air bag inflater is not working. if you don't know the root cause of a problem it is hard to do a recall. they need to ramp up manufacturing of the inflaters. let's say you recall 13 million vehicles you are not going to come up with 13 mill

takata almost has a monopoly on airbag supply. so far, you have not seen any executives badmouth their main supplier of airbags. >> i know you will talk to doubt joe hendrix in the next hour from ford. what have they said about the recalls? fields, the ceo last week what he thought about it and he said he has not seen any specific problems of the cars they tested and they have had a good relationship with their supplier. bill ford said the same thing. we have not heard any bad mouthing, any change of plans as far as new airbag suppliers. i don't think manufacturers have really anyone else to go to. no one else can make that many airbags this quickly. >> beyond this news, what about the news of all the new models being shown on the floor there? what are some of the cool things you have seen? >> there are 66 new models here. obviously, i am in heaven looking at these new cars. there is a new mustang gt-350 which is more track focused and i think it's one of the most important cars of the show and i will talk about that but there is

. >> officials at japanese autoparts company takata are facing more problems over their defective air bags. safety regulators in the u.s. want all cars with the devices off the road. officials at the national highway traffic safety administration have ordered takata and five automakers to issue a nationwide recall by tuesday. they've threatened to impose fines if the firms miss the deadline. executives at the automakers have been resisting the recall. they say there's not enough evidence to justify the move. safety regulators have already recalled about 8 million cars with takata air bags mainly in the southern part of the u.s. they say the devices can spray metal fragments that can injure people in the car. observers say that if the automakers comply with the order the recalls could spread internationally. well, this morning the share price of takata is falling sharply at the open of the tokyo stocks exchange the air bagmaker fell by 7%. right now it is down 5.3%. the recall order applies to carmakers like honda and mazda. their share prices declined at the open, too. overall the nik
