did race in the philadelphia marathon. the starting line is along the ben franklin parkway near the philadelphia museum of art. the course takes runners through fairmount park, university city, and manniyunk, back at the art museum. a lot of work has gone into making the 26.2-mile course safe and memorable. there will be a lot of the road closures including streets in fairmount park. the weekend draws 60,000 spectators and 3,000 volunteers. the weekend kicked off with the 8k this morning. the winner crossed the finish line in just under 24 minutes. >> being part of a group is always special. always so enthusiastic to be with so many people who are happy and willing to do this on this cold early morning. so it's all for good. >> katherine martin of long island broke the 60 to 64-year-old national age group record for the 8k. she ran it in 32: 20. nbc10.com is your complete source for everything related to race weekend. our news and weather apps give you the latest forecast. plus find information about the traffic detours th

action at the philadelphia marathon. tens of thousands of runners are trying for their best times on the 26.2-mile course. nbc 10's matt delucia has been at the finish line. matt, tell us about the first place winner to cross not too long ago. >> reporter: that runner crossed at two hours, 17 minutes and 28 seconds. that is the unofficial time. it still has to be certified. take a look live right now at some of the other marathon finishers crossing right now. we're at about two hours and 31 minutes. we're also waiting for the first-place female finisher. let's show you video of what it looked like when that first place winner crossed. and that man is dan vesalo. he's joining me right now. congratulations on the win. 26.2 miles. how did you do it? >> i mean, i just kind of stuck to my plan the entire time. i wanted to run about 5.15 per mile, fast enough to get me to the u.s. olympic trials. it was really tough the last couple miles, but it was really nice to have a field with me there that i could either stay ahead of or

i am the special agent in charge of the philadelphia field office. tonight the fbi and the philadelphia police department have great news. carlesha freeland has been rescued. her abductor has been arrested. [ cheering and applause ] >> in maryland. to give you a bit of background, right from the night of the kidnapping philadelphia police department and the fbi have been working tirelessly to try to solve this case. with the help of the media and many, many citizens who called in tips, we were able to identify this individual, identify his car and track it into maryland. tonight we surveilled that vehicle in the area of jessop, maryland, and a task force from our baltimore fbi office consisting of u.s. marshals, atf agents and fbi agents located the car. when the subject exited the vehicle, he was apprehended and that's when ms. freeland was recovered. she's in good shape, has some injuries, but was taken to the hospital. she is talking to the agents. the subject's name is delven barnes, 37-year-old male. he's being currently held on a warrant based

a man was shot in north philadelphia and died at the hospital. nbc 10 was on the scene on north colorado street there. police say a victim, a man in his early 20s, was shot at close range just after 11:00 last night. so far, there are no arrests or no motives for the murder. >>> also, investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a vacant row home in philadelphia on mayfield street in kensington. firefighters quickly had the fire out. officials tell us there were squatters inside the home at the time. they made it out and left the scene. >>> 3:04 now. and happening today, the man accused of kidnapping a philadelphia woman and sparking a three-day manhunt will appear in federal court in center city today. devlin barnes was transferred from a jail in philadelphia yesterday, held in virginia on separate charges that he kidnapped and raped a 16-year-old girl there. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in center city. jesse, barnes now has to face charges in the philadelphia kidnapping, so what will happen in court this afternoon? >> reporter: chris, b

right now the winds are calm in philadelphia. we have more of an easterly wind component and that will be with us during the day tomorrow as well. so we have those clear skies, light winds, a few clouds tomorrow but for the most part beautiful day as high pressure drifts toward the north and the east and warmth moves in from the south and west. so temperatures tomorrow in the upper 60s to around 70 in some spots ahead of this arctic front and then it moves closer still warmth squeezed up the eastern see bore. highs still in the 60s. but behind this is all of that cold air we've been talking about. the good news is, by the time it moves in we're not talking about temperatures in the 20s or the theirs. highs will be in the 40s. it will be the coldest air of the season but not as biting cold as we'll see in places like chicago tomorrow. so still a sunny day thursday but there are some indications that coastal moisture gets close enough we could see a rain or wet snow shower thursday night. that's still to be determine but of course

look outside now of a few cloud in the philadelphia area. 47 at the airport. our humidity at 59, wind speeds out of the south southwest at 6 miles per hour. right now temperatures throughout the rest of the region, mid-40s atlantic city, clearer skies there. as we head into the night, we'll continue to see clouds increasing, mostly cloudy skies expected. a closer look at poconos, temperatures 37. 44 in reading and also 47 in wildwood. radar shot shows clouds moving in right over the philadelphia area. if we widen out the picture, you can see snowfall in parts of canada, rainfall in buffalo. that's not going to affect us of that will stay north of us. as we head through the night, mostly cloudy skies. also see temperatures pushing back into the 50s tomorrow. mid-50s are average this time of year. 59 degrees. we're slowly climbing closer to the average. by monday back in the 60s. we stay that way for the first half of the workweek. heading out to the eagles game monday. because our temperatures are going to warm up, that's going to set us up nicely by monday. fo

in the philadelphia skyline, the letters atop of the 1 south broad building. chopper 6 flying overhead this afternoon giving us this view. today we learned crews are planning to remove the massive letters this weekend. and this will be their second go at it. you may remember in august they tried to remove the letters but the operation hit a snag. ment the idea was to get the letters down one by one. they want to are you ever to the 1930 design. each letter weighs 3,000 pounds. a powerful helicopter with a steel cable gently lifted each one until the workers were concerned that the 60-year-old structure could fall apart in midair. that's when the crews called it a day. they are set to try again in sunday so you can expect a number of road closures around city hall beginning at 6:00 a.m. until at least 4:00 p.m. this sunday. over to rick and monica. >> ok. >>> time for an update on the commute home on a friday night. >> and what matt pellman has in store for us. any good news, matt? >> nothing good on a friday night. crank up the heaters and get ready to sit on
