embassy in light of the issues in yemen. u.s. drone strike, ongoing fighting with sunni tribes some allied with al qaeda, the increased violence part of the chaos that ensued since houthis captured the capital of sanaa, forcing the government to resign. for more we're joined from denver colorado, by laura casanof. she's the author of the new book, don't be afraid of the bullets, an accidental war correspondent in yemen. laura, good to have you with us. i'll get to your book in a moment. how this seems to be getting worse, a new government was formed three days ago but just as this was happening, general lloyd austin warned the u.s. could lose an ally in the war against terrorism. how did we end up here? >> i think that's a good question. there's a lot of people in yemen asking that same thing. one thing we know is that president hadi since he has been inaugurated in 2012, has not bean good president, done little to quell the political forces in the country. the group that took advantage of his poor leadership and the power vacuum

sanctions against yemen's ready is due to take place on friday. he is accused of houthi fighters taking the capitol. his office said that they were told to leave by friday or face sanctions. the u.s. has asked the united nations as well. not surprising when the party comes out saying that there were dangerous sanctions that would effect yemen and it's neighbors. i'm particularly interested in that statement and what it means by its neighbors? >> well basically the followers are of the few that that is a blatant interference in yemen's internal affairs. they are concerned this is part of an plot. they said if these sanctions come in to affect tonight tomorrow they would convene and announce new escalation and dramatic decisions according to them. for them it's not only yemen which is going to be affected but the whole region, and basically this is something that they had been saying when he was in power. this is the same message that he has been telling the americans. i'm the only guaranteed possibility in yemen. if i go al-qaeda will take over. re

let's cross now for omar who joins us live from the yemen capital. any indication as to who may have been behind the murder? and where does this leave the peace deal? >> there is no indication yesterday. with regard to his involvements in the negotiations, he wasn't directly involved in the negotiations, he was a figure that tried to mediate between -- among the different blocks from behind. let me read you some of the reaction about that murder. the yemen president said they will pursue the perpetrators and hold them accountable. the president said the assassination coincides with effort to end the current crisis in yemen and the aim of the murderers is to mix cards and create chaos and unrest. now, the houthis who are major political and military force also condemned what they called the assassination, however, they blame the authorities for failing to provide security. >> now, on a different matter, omar, we are also hearing there were air strikes late yesterday. can you tell us more about the these strikes. >> reporter: yes, according to sources

this is the chaos engulfing yemen. cnn has learned u.s. officials have grown so concerned over instability in recent days that the military is updating plans to evacuate personnel from america's embassy in the capital, marines and helicopters at the ready off the coast. it is worrisome to a friend of u.s. ambassador matthew tooler. >> i would say he's in a great deal of danger because you have all of these factions fighting around the country and a couple of them would like to take out the embassy and him. >> reporter: the terror group claims it recently planted explosives at the home of yemen's president while the ambassador was visiting. the group says the bombs were found moments before detonation. a yemeni official says there were no explosives that they know of found at the house. still, u.s. officials are worried about another benghazi. sunni has been battling against a shia rebel group who wants to seize power. >> now we have stabilized the situation and it's a big problem for us. frankly, right now, no one is. >> no one is in charg

yemen is very interesting to see. there's a new front that has been open in yemen. maybe potentially lebanon could be also a new front. the second factor, i u think, is more worrying. it is changing due to the refugee. in the sunni mind set, the syrian refugees are partly syrians, but they are also sunni refugees. and in a way, these poor people living in very poor conditions in regions and areas could easily be weaponized armed and mobilized against hezbollah and lebanon. and even without a kind of impetus by a sunni leadership in the region, by nature themselves, they could become weaponized with time if the kind of persecution they are any way perceiving as such is continuing against them. if you take the numbers in lebanon, you can easily imagine that you can mobilize arm and finance 20 to 30,000 young guys stretching from 16 years old to 25 years old and like in 1975, build a kind of reserve army for the sunni political force which feels more and more humiliated in lebanon. this is the factor that has to be closely watched and it has to be watched from the leba
