bill belichick has left the podium. for a full nine minutes he stood there and said he had nothing to do with deflate gate nothing to do at all. he also said he has no explanation as to why this happened. he also said he'll make sure it doesn't happen again and he will fully cooperate with the nfl investigation. he talked a little bit about tom brady, but not much. he said we'll leave it to tom brady to tell you all how hard he likes his footballs i guess. let's talk more about this with c rachel nichols, john berman and coy wire. welcome back to all of you. it did strike me john berman that bill belichick came out and he was ready to talk. he doesn't talk often at these press conferences. >> in a way he doesn't talk ever at these press conferences. i've never heard him speak so much at one time without interruption. clearly he wanted to get something off his chest. he said something interesting. he didn't leave a lost of wiggle room. he said flat out, i didn't even know what the process was with footballs before this.

bill belichick has spoken. ten days before the super bowl the head coach of the new england patriots addressed the scandal that's happening over his team and the nfl as well. he says he's never talked about the air pressure in a football before now. >> when i came in monday morning, i was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs. i had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation

bill belichick was fined $500,000. there was an erroneous report that the boston herald put out in february of 2008 that was dismissed and the herald took the unprecedented step of issuing a front page and back page apology saying we were wrong. but i think a lot of people get it twisted. they think that the patriots were guilty of taping the st. louis rams before super bowl xxxvi. the one thing that stands out, rachel is spygate and that's the issue. >> i want to get back to something bill belichick said. jim, he said that part of the issue, too, is how they prepare and treat the footballs before they even bring them to the officials. he talked about rubbing them with a substance that could add artificially one extra psi. have you heard about anything like this before? how does something that you treat a football with inflate the air inside the football? >> that is the first time i've ever heard that kind of a comment. i can tell you as an official -- and the official's job is strictly to receive the footballs from th

bill belichick alluded to that this morning. tom can tell you more about how he likes the football than bill belichick could tell you. i think bill belichick probably knows how tom brady likes his football, but we sort of are playing a little bit of word gymnastics in this situation here. but look tom brady can stand in front of there, as you guys mentioned, aaron rodgers likes it overinflated. i think that might be a little bit in play here that the officials, they do, you know weigh the balls about two hours and 15 minutes ahead of time. and then they're given back to the team. so they're not kept in the officials' locker room there before the game time. they go back to the team. so it's easy to doctor the ball up a little bit, maybe let a little bit of the air out. if it's for brady that he has a smaller hand or he just wants that grip a little bit better so that he can get his accuracy the way he needs it to be then that's what he can do. and maybe in the past officials have turned a blind eye to it. but these are all the qu

here comes bill belichick approaching the podium. listen in, rob, and let's talk about it after. >>> all right. i'll start up by addressing the football issue here. when i came in monday morning, i was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs. i had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation until monday morning. i learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than i knew or had talked about it in the last 40 years i've coached in this league. i had no knowledge of the various steps involved in the game balls and the process that went through-- that happened between when they were prepared and went to the officials and went to the game. so i've learned a lot about that. i obviously understand that each team has the opportunity to prepare the balls the way they want. give them to the officials, and the game officials either approve or disapprove the balls and that really was the end of it for me. until i learned a little bit more about this the last couple days. let me just say that my personal coaching p

bill belichick saying i'm not a scientist. i've learned more about this than i ever thought i possibility could in the last few days. but he's saying no one on the team did anything to alter the footballs bottom line. and i'm not talking about this anymore. ben, to you the nfl says are going to get to the bottom of it but will they where the super bowl? >> i doubt it. but realistically they're probably going to take longer than that because there's going to want to be a suspension here. they don't want to suspend people before the super bowl which i think is pretty spineless. but that's what we expect from the nfl. but the part about belichick today where i think he dug himself even a bigger hole if that's possible -- let me get this straight. 11 of the 12 footballs on your side were affected by the weather, and the atmospheric pressure but the footballs on the other side of the field were not affected by the same weather. >> much warmer on the other side of the field. >> and they were okay. so yeah, exactly. i'm sitting there

we heard on thursday from coach bill belichick, again today, and from tom brady. we have not heard from tom brady since then. we may before the super bowl but, you know understandably listening to bill belichick, as you said comes with the background of spygate and the penalty that he paid. what about listening to tom brady? should that play into the credibility we give to tom brady, though? >> caller: well i would tell you this and i'm a half basketball playerment anyone who plays hack basketball can tell the difference in ball pressure as soon as you touch the ball. trying to get a better basketball to play with. i'm a hack tennis player. i can tell within three strokes whether the tension in the strains need to be adjusted or not or grab a different racket. no one who played any sort of sports consistently believes someone's livly hood is based upon -- especially that's the specifications of their football didn't notice that the ball was at a certain pressure no one is buying that feeding into why we continue to press with this deflategate, because a couple thi
