brian stelter, let's be clear. we talked in 2011 with the firebombing of the same office building because of the cover of the prophet muhammad and it's not just that region that they attack. sort of no one is immune here at this magazine. >> it was in all forms and stripes. they knew it was risky to do that. some cartoonists had talked openly about that. they rather take that risk face the danger that it entails and they face difficult decisions on whether to reprint and show some of these cartoons. >> here at cnn we go through many, many decisions when it comes to certain images we are going to show you. at a place like this what decisions are made? >> it's very sensitive. to show images of the prophet muhammad is offensive to some muslims and cnn in the past and today for example is not showing close-up images of these cartoons that this magazine did print. some websites have decided to republish them and they are a symbol of the protest. what i see today is the pen. >> let's show those images. >> people holding

[ gunshots ] editor and top cartoonist who made a living out of lampooning all religions but it appears this attack is in retaliation for cartoons about islam. two police officers were killed and graphic video showing the moment one of them lying wounded blurred for in the bottom of your screen was shot in the head. we know 11 people are wounded. four of them critically. as for gunmen they left and sped off according to paris prosecutor they engaged in multiple shootouts with police and then continued into another district of paris where they ditched their original car, got into another one and for now the manhunt for these terror suspects continues. joining me live fro

cnn's senior media correspondent brian stelter has traveled to paris and is here now with more on this historic terror attack and story that's playing out since. the significance of 3 million copies, how are they pulling this off, brian? >> reporter: they are getting a lot of help, ashleigh, help from rival newspapers and magazines, help from newspapers and companies even outside this country of france. "the guardian" in britain has contributed money, a press fund set up by google is contributing money. they've had a whole lot of help from neighbors and usually rivals. there was a press conference earlier today here in paris with some of the editors and there was a loud round of applause from all the journalists in the room when those cartoonists and editors came in to speak. we have a pdf copy of the magazine. this is not an issue that has blank pages. that's not the kind of tribute that the surviving staff has prepared. instead they are putting out the same proud kind of content that they come out with every week. sometimes lewd and even pornographic cartoons mocking all sorts of fol

i want to get to brian stelter here, our senior media consultant and also dean obeidallah. dean is an arab comedian. you write about the rise in satires in places that you would least likely find it. >> i wrote about it. there are comics making fun of isis by name, people in iraq and lebanon, palestinians as well. mocking it to undermine their legitimacy. they're using humor to say, these people don't represent islam. they're the exception, not mainstream muslims. >> and there is a risk/reward here? >> yes. they're risking their lives. they know their lives are on the line by mocking them. >> and in paris, some of these cartoonists knew what they were doing was risky. the most moving statement i saw was from the editor-in-chief who said, i don't understand how people can attack a newspaper with heavy weapons. he said, a newspaper is not a weapon of war. >> but it is a weapon of ideology. how do you fight this, do you continue to publish it and risk your own employees? >> for myself as a muslim, i want to make it clear, we have nothing against freedom of expressi expression.

joined now by brian stelter. in your experience have you ever seen a situation like this where a magazine that has something like 60,000 in a special moment by a factor of 50 increases their circulation. i'm guessing these copies are going to go. >> i think so to. i can't think of an analogy to this. it was 60,000 on a good day. they often didn't sell all those copies. this was a magazine struggling to stay afloat a few weeks ago asking the public to do so and not getting much help. this magazine didn't have millions of fans. it did have fans. it did have an audience. it had supporters. it wasn't beloved by all of france that it now sort of feels like. i've been struck in the last few hours walking around this city in different parts of the city you see that sign i am charlie all over the place and not just right here but all over the place. >> we had cops from new york coming here as well to show their support. there are a lot of steps that people are taking to show their defiance and this national unity. one wa

cnn's brian stelter joins me now with more. i know it's michael moore. i was taken aback by this. >> me too. a lot of other people as well. it seemed to come out of nowhere. we don't know if he's seen the movie or not. the first step is you have to see the movie and then maybe you can comment on it. he's not the only one saying things like this. there's a billboard in los angeles for this movie. there's now graffiti over it with the word murder saying that chris kyle was not a hero he was a murderer. >> and then seth rogen came out too. mr. north korea? >> he says he felt like this movie played like the movie that was third act in "glorious bastards." this movie mirrors a public debate that's happening about war. 13 14 years into the war on terror many years after most of our troops came home from iraq. no longer is the iraq war something that's being shown on movie theaters as a present day event. it's now history. history is talked about differently than events still progressing. >> like the vietnam war. >> the tone of movies changed after the vietnam
