i'm carol costello thank you for joining me. we begin with world leaders urgently trying to contain the spread of terrorism. next hour in london secretary of state john kerry will discuss a coalition of 20 nations now united to combat isis. the terror group is gaining ground in yemen as the critical u.s. ally spirals deeper into chaos. in yemen's capital, u.s. troops are awaiting orders to evacuate the embassy if necessary, and there's growing fear that time is running out. across the region the rise of isis is creating a power struggle of sorts as al qaeda and its loyalists control more territory and more recruits. in yemen isis is challenging the dominance of the local branch of al qaeda in

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are expecting chris cornell to arrive at the federal courthouse in cincinnati in the next couple of hours. he'll appear before the judge at 1:30 for his scheduled detention hearing. inside the courtroom, his parents are planning to be here. they have not spoken to his son since his arrest but they are speaking out in defense of him. christopher cornell was a high school wrestling star and his parents had hopes for a bright future but he didn't find his path after high school. >> breaks my heart. he had so much potential. he could have got a scholarship. >> reporter: recently there was reason to be hopeful again. >> he became a happier person. >> his attitude changed. he became a lot happier. he said when he prayed he felt calm and felt at peace with himself and with god. he became just happy go lucky. >> reporter: he grew out his beard and adapted islam after reading a lot about it and his parents saw signs his beliefs had really taken hold. >> he would come in at prayer time. say

i'm carol costello. thank you for joining me. a blizzard called historic and life threatening ready to explode over the northeast. this is i-80 at i-20. you can see this is just the beginning. i-80 at 280. this is new jersey. this is just the beginning as you can see. it's pretty nasty driving already. it's a good idea if you just stay home. north of cape cod, they are worried. homeowners are boarding up. ferocious winds could reach hurricane strength it as much as three feet of snow could fall here. airlines have canceled some 4,000 flights for today and tomorrow and new york's mayor is sounding the alarm for anyone tempted to dismiss the threat. >> this literally could be one of the top two or three largest storms in the history of this city and we need to plan accordingly. my message to all new yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before. prepare to be safe. >> we are covering all angles of this dangerous storm that's unfolding. cnn crews are fanned out across the northeast. as the snow starts to come down

carol? >> paula hancocks reporting, thank you. >>> among the many challenges search crews are up against, bad weather. as i said strong winds high waves are hampering the search. keep in mind it's also monsoon season. how will this play out over the next several days. cnn's chad myers has more on that. >> what certainly makes things more difficult out there, waves 10 to 12 feet you're battling that battling wind at 20 to 30 miles per hour. on top of those waves all you see are white caps and you're looking for white pieces of a white plane. that makes it more like a washing machine in this area. the storms weren't as bad yesterday as we had. we had a couple storms here. one big cell right over that black box. right now things have calmed down. right up to current. there are clouds out there, but clear enough to get planes in the sky. the problem is it's 10:00 at night there, so there's no reason to put planes in the sky because it's completely dark. a couple showers around. but things get be

the lets get to meteorologist, carol erickson with the very latest on the snow, good morning, carol. what are we talking about here, will we see a foot dusting, what can we expect. >> in the a dusting. a foot is in the realm of some of the computer model's possibilities. could we be seeing more than that? could this develop farther off the the coast where we're in the impacted as much? all of those scenarios are in play at this point. the the storm is not off the coast and until we get it closer to that location, it is pretty

let's check on that forecast with carol. we don't have to tell you, it is cold again outside. >> it is. >> tan will continue, right carol? >> well, little bit. very cold this morning but we do get above the freezing mark later today. that's just the headlines. because we haven't seen much of that. so it, will get slightly warmer today. won't get warm. but at least it will be above the freezing mark little later on. it looks bright out there right now. ben franklin bridge looking just terrific. we have temperatures of 17 degrees, out at the airport in philadelphia, seven in wilmington, could you add any number in front that far seven, and you would probably like t but there you go. you could add a nine in front of that, and it still wouldn't be that bad. we have 15 in trenton, 16 allentown, 5 degrees in millville this morning. it is cold out there. but fortunately it is not all that winnie. so the temperatures are not made to feel any colder than they actually are. by noon, we should be freezing by noon, and then by 3:00 p.m.

for that we will go to meteorologist carol erickson with the cbs-3 mobil weather lab, hi carol. >> well, i thought we could hide out forever and apparently we can't and sunday was i grim remind are of that. we are now in the king of prussia area and things look great out here quite frankly. if you have shopping or anything else. even sections of the schuylkill where that 50 car pile up happened on sunday, just perfectly smooth through there. so the roads have been salted, so heavily you will be walking on crunchy salt. parking lots, streets, every where else, the roads are ready and road crews have gotten everybody ready for this. the own thing that may be different we will turn here and see this car that hasn't been cleaned off. some people are dealing with cars that sat out in this and couple inches of snow that they have got to take off the cars. the sidewalks if they have not been shuffles are very much snow covered but this was a powdery snow that came down for the the most part. it does provide a crunchy surface to walk on which is far better than walking around on any kind have b

hi chad. >> hi carol. it does get a lot better on sunday that's still probably 36 to 48 hours before we can say the storms will be gone the skies will be clearing and the wind will be dropping off. right now the winds are still 30 to 40 miles per hour over that site. blowing some of the top debris down of course but also like they were saying anything under the ground under the water, not blowing around there's no turbulence down there. so there's the storms from overnight, they pop up and go away and if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time it's even dangerous for some of the ships to be out here because waves and winds 13 15 feet winds 50 miles per hour that finally all does go away though by sunday morning. they will see decent weather. scattered showers on and off. it's not going to be a perfect scenario. this isn't going to be finding something in a bathtub. there will still be storms, an inch or two of rain in the next 48 hours but the big story is the wind. we're about 20 miles per hour. for t

carol? >> as far as arming those moderate rebels and training them do we know how that operation is progressing? >> well just the very beginning stages are in the works of trying to vet people you know make sure that they legitimately if you will are moderate rebels that if they do train them, if they give them arms they're not going to just go back and take up arms in some other fashion, if you will that they really will go back and fight. this is a very complicated situation as well. there are a number of countries in the region that have agreed to host the training of these rebel forces. they obviously can't do it inside syria but, you know i don't think anybody in the pentagon is overly cheerful about any of this. it'll take a good long while, months if not years. isis interesting. across the border in iraq the feeling is that isis may be a little more stagnant. the feeling is that isis now has extended its areas so much indeed that they have to consolidate what they have. they have to w

how are things looking here in lumberton, burlington county carol? >> you know, it is not that bad out here. we're on the main drag here. this is route 541 just come through the little town of lumberton. it looks fine. but let's see what we've got whether we turn left here, on bella road. this is what everybody finds. it is completely different on these side street. so, pay particular attention when you come off nice street, and then you end up in one that can have a lot of slush still on the roads. nicole and katie? >> we just wanted to stay on that shot for few more second. but take us up to speed. >> basically the brunt is through. we really saw i guess if we had to deal with storm time doing have been a lot worse than it was. >> sure. >> last evening drive, most of the brunt of this came overnight, you know, but we are still going to be dealing with the residual sort of aftermath issues here on storm scan3, still see it, heaviest moisture pulls away, but more on the horizon off to the south and west. so here's the general time line. key word gene

the lets check with carol with more about this storm mostly a rain maker. >> it is a rain maker. there could be a brief period i mean a brief period of freezing rain if the precipitation first goes into these colder areas because we are looking at temperatures, still below freezing mark but that is not a guarantee and it is wrapped change over to rain. in atlantic city you might find a rain drop hitting a lens on the camera from skies cam three. we will head down to rehoboth beach and you are looking at rain down there. the the boardwalk is glistening and rain is falling in that direction, temperature of 32 degrees. with precipitation and at that mark when this precipitation starts make sure thaw are very careful out there. you can see it from the south and we are finding it in the southern areas of our viewing area at the the present time. it is not heavy, anything that you see at this point but it is definitely out there. we are going to be continuing to monitor this as it moves into the the area. it is getting a closer view here. when you zoo he that pink shading going by and

>> carol thank you. meanwhile six shootings mark violent night in two neighborhoods here in philadelphia. three men shot dead execution style in holmesburg and in nicetown. three people shot at a birthday party. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson picks up the story liver outside police headquarters steve? >> there was the birthday party, triple shooting, what philadelphia police are calling an execution style triple murder. i want to start with that in holmesburg. police responding, shortly before about 11:30 last night police say they get on scene three hispanic males found shot in the back of the head. they do describe that again as an execution style murder. the girlfriend of one of those victims, police say was trying to communicate with her boyfriend, she went to the location which was the 4600 block of vista street. the second shooting again birthday party in logan police responding, to that triple shooting, at the reflections bar and it is the corner of 17th street and wig w wing owe hoggi
