joining me now general jack keane, chairman for the institute of chairman of war and former army chief of staff. what's your reaction to all this? >> well, it's frustrating to be sure. obviously there's no operational command information that these guys have gained from this, but that wasn't their intent. their intent was a propaganda victory, and they've achieved that. and i think what disturbs me the most that maybe terrorizing and intimidating our soldiers and their families. if they release some information about them even though it's available on other sources, the fact it's in such a public way that that information is released. i mean, our soldiers and their families go through enough challenges and stresses in terms of their deployment separations and threat of losing life and limb. without this added baggage to everyday life. so that really frustrates me. what the media's doing -- what the military's doing is like other government agencies they're trying to open themselves up a little bit. after all only 1% of this population in america participates in the military. and so the

joining us is general jack keane. there has been so much criticism of the president's and the pentagon's plan saying they were pulling their punches against isis. have the gloves come off? >> the airstrikes have had a significant impact on isis. taken any new territory in months. the airstrikes in iraq have been successful in stopping their offensive capability. they are still conduct offensive operations but no new territory. in syria they are attacking offensively across a large swath of territories still in kobani where we have a stalemate and all the way to the iraqi border in eastern sir yeah. so that's a different situation. but the airstrikes have had positive impact there as well. >> but they have yet to dismantle isis. isis is on the offense not the defense. how do you change that dynamic and start putting isis back on its heels? >> it will take a considerable effort. the indigenous forces we are relying on, in iraq the sunni peshmerga tribes and militia. they will have to retake some of the territory that's

four-star general jack keane is here. does the new year bring a new strategy for how we go after isis? they're still rampaging across that region. >> i think the basic strategy the president put out they'll stick with. one is to undermine and deglamourize the ideology. stop the flow of isis. and stop all of the money that gets to the inside. programs that do that are classified. we won't see much of the results of that. i hope we have rigorous programs and full accountability. i'm certain that the congress will explore it. the thing that's obvious to everyone is the military operation. i think the plan in iraq is simply to assist the indigenous forces. we'll see a lot of training and assistance going on now to do that. i believe the resources are inadequate to get done what we need to get done. i don't see a collapse of isis in 2014 as a result of it. in syria i think the plan is flawed. the disagreement in the administration as we know it. this is what secretary hagel was so frustrated about and i think it led somewhat -
