our becky anderson is joining me live. you've had a chance to speak with the interior minister in jordan. what's the response here? >> reporter: that's right, in the last couple of minutes since we've been reporting this story. and he just told us by phone that isis has been trying to destroy the resolve of the jordanian people. this has been a pivotal week here. and he says that what this is is an attempt to drive a wedge between coalition members, and that will not happen. as i say, a pivotal week here dealing with the skepticism that it deserves, important to hear from the jordanians, though. and this will be incredibly, incredibly difficult to take in what is still a mourning period here for the young jordanian pilot who was burned alive, the video released just this week. he believed to have been killed by isis a month ago. the deep depravity of this group continues. >> becky anderson live for us in amman, jordan. barbara starr is our pentagon spobt joining me live from the pentagon. one of the big questions -- let me

cnn's becky anderson joins us live. becky, what's the latest? >> reporter: yeah the very latest is this. that the father of the executed pilot spoke in the last few minutes and demanded the following. he wants revenge for the blood of his son. executions of the would-be suicide or female suicide bomber he said not enough even though that of course happened at dawn today. nothing short of annihilation of isis should be the plan he said. well if isis sees the latest evil you're absolutely right, will cause the regional players in the u.s. fight against them to crack in their support, then they have seemingly miscalculated. you are absolutely correct to say that king abdullah is due back from washington in the next hour. and we are told that crowds now gathering at the airport to meet him there. there's been a big push on social media to provide support for him as he arrives. and he has vowed punishment and revenge for the death of the pilot. the king described isis as a deviant criminal group. he is expected to visit the village near the south of

let's go to cnn's becky anderson in jordan. good morning, becky. >> reporter: good morning to you, carol. no further information on that from this end. jordanians saying no evidence to suggest that she was killed in an air strike by one of their planes. look there's been a real commitment by the emirates who have flown in half a dozen f-16 fighter jets with ammunition to fly alongside their jordanian counterparts who have been taking this pivotal role in this fight against isis. the jordanians make it very very clear. they've been very blunt about this. they need more money and more military might if they are going to attack degrade and destroy this group that is pedalling this pervasive ideology. we spoke to a government spokesman earlier today. there is a festering problem not just outside of jordan's borders but within. while they are slow to acknowledge that to a certain extent they are very quick to suggest that this is a problem that needs dealing with and needs dealing with now. have a listen. >> we have a very good grab

>> becky anderson thank you. i want to stay on this and continue this conversation with lieutenant colonel and general. glad to have you back. >> hello brooke. good to see you. >> we've heard a lot about this before. this has to be the region's a war and not just the u.s.'s war. we know it's coalition of 60 members. today we did see the acknowledgment from jordan. how do you think the 30 jets as becky was reporting on -- how might this change the state of play in this coalition war? >> this is very symbolic brooke. i think the jordanian air force wanted to get as many planes in the air as possible. they coordinated that with the central command air force element, the one that put together air tasking order to fly multinational ships over the territory where we're we're conducting operations. this was a symbol. daesh wanted to intimidate jordan by killing their pilot. just the opposite is effect of all of this. that's critically important. >> we don't have specifics as far as the effectiveness of strikes though th

becky anderson live in abu dhabi with more on this. hi becky. >> yeah hello. good morning. this is what we know at this point. isis militants abducting, as you rightly point out, at least 90 a syrian christians from two villages in northeastern syria. this information coming from a variety of organizations, not least the london-based syrian observatory for human rights who said and i quote, reliable sources overheard isis militants talking on wireless devices about having detained some 56 as they described them crusaders in one village alone. you'll be aware that isis or daesh has attacked numerous minority groups likely syrians, during what is this bloody campaign to create what they call a vast caliphate across syria and iraq under what is an extreme version of sharia law. just this summer isis overran the city of an historic syrian town of some 50,000 people in northern iraq about 20 miles southeast of mosul. at the time isis issued an ultimateum to christians there, convert to islam, pay a fine or face death by the sword, carol. that's the latest. >> becky anderson repo

becky anderson cnn, amman. >>> becky anderson thank you for that report. let's get straight to buck sexton a former cia counterterrorism analyst. thanks for being with me. it's good to have you. >> good to be here. >> huge step up by jordan and the uae after they pulled back in december in the fight. i wonder if you think there comes a point where we can hand over much of this to our allies in the region? >> quite honestly i think they're looking to us to do considerably more because there are limitations. >> so no? >> no. what's happened here is there's been a change. it was acceptable for a while to box isis in and to contain them to the greatest degree possible and that's what the campaign has been doing while they try to galvanize allies on the ground and create the forces necessary to take back territory in iraq and on top of that take back territory in syria. what's changed is the jordanians are saying we don't want to wait around anymore and we don't want to wait for you guys in d.c. and washington to come up with a grand strategy to deal with this

becky anderson cnn, amman. >>> we should say make no mistake here. despite those damaging coalition attacks that becky mentioned, isis remains a powerful and determined force. for example, around the key oil-rich city of kirkuk in iraq kurdish peshmerga forces are dug in desperately trying to hold off an isis offensive against the major city. phil black is on the front line. >> reporter: an ominous symbol declaring a threatening presence. the black flags of isis flying above its fighters' fortifications. this is the view of isis positions from just across a short bridge just behind the defenses of kurdish fighters. they're known as peshmerga, and they're digging in here after isis recently surge north with a major offensive to try and take the city of kirkuk. the isis flag is just there. you see how close the opposing lines are. the kurdish fires repelled the isis attack. they've taken back most of the territory. they tell us that almost every night isis still tests their defenses. and the fighters here believe this in the next few days there's going

joining me, becky anderson live in amman jordan and former commanding general of the u.s. army, mark hurt link. for two years, general hurtling commanded a task force in iraq too. i want to begin with you, becky with this notion that the king has made this personal. there was a posting of a photograph by the royal court of the king himself in his military flight suit. can you tell me a little bit about how the rest of that country is responding, especially in light of those going out and back just today. >> yeah, i mean, he's a military man himself. he flies helicopters. this is and will be very, very close to his heart. he spent three or four hours in the south of the country today. paying his respects to the family and family members of that young pilot. to a family who had asked that jordan seek revenge. they had asked for the total annihilation of isis after those gruesome, gruesome pictures that isis posted of the burning of that young man. there is a real sense here that people are standing united since that video was posted. let me tell you, i was speaking to source

our becky anderson is in amman and joins us live with more. becky, we should note that the emirates have halted air patrols over syria after the killing of the jordanian pilot. they're now back in the fight. top officials being tightlipped about this. you wonder what's really behind it. is the uae more of a reluctant partner in this coalition fight? >> reporter: well those were reports that they had grounded their jets. and certainly the commitment to the emirates is real with the arrival of f-16s, squad around of f-16s, c-17s, and other refueling assets to fly alongside their jordanian counterparts in this real fight against isis from abdabby to amman. i think -- abu dhabi to amman. i think it's clear they recognize the threat from this group. it was a grisly video showing lieutenant colonel muath al kasasbeh being burned alive. gruesome even by isis standards. now had t has galvanized the -- now it has galvanized the arab world. countries like jordan are stepping up participation in the coalition attacking isis. >> this is definitely not the

becky anderson joins us live now from abu dhabi. becky, will there be a feeling now that u.s. regional allies like jordan, like saudi arabia will end up paying too high a price for supporting the united states? >> reporter: i think you make a very good point here. i think it's fair to say that this was a video likely aimed primarily at the arab population in jordan and indeed these gcc allies who play a crucial part in this u.s.-led coalition. this is another brutal act by isis. this time really striking at the heart of jordanian society. citizens had rallied around moath al kasasbeh's cause. he was the first active member of this u.s.-led coalition fighting against isis to be captured by the militant group. he came from a very important tribe in jordan. it seems by killing him, especially in what is this brutal group, isis wants to put pressure on the jordanian government and other governments around here and make it more difficult to remain in this coalition, targeting the group. but remember jordan is a very tribal society. and king abdullah needs the support of those tribe

our correspondent, becky anderson is joining us now from the united arab emirates in abu dhabi. you had a chance to speak with a top jordanian spokesman. what was his message? >> reporter: yeah according to the government's spokesman who met king abdullah within the past couple of hours, jordan will intensify its efforts with the international coalition fighting isis. so how far that will manifest itself that is still being negotiated. between the king and the army and indeed the coalition, not least with washington. do have a list of what he said is unlikely to happen next. >> at this point, our policy we have said that boots on the ground will be the iraqi military the syrian moderate forces to fight terrorism, the peshmerga in the kurdish area. so this is the type of boots on the ground that we talked about and the coalition talked about, not talking about boots on the ground. >> reporter: wolf the message from jordan and other arab members of the coalition is this -- if isis is to be stopped, jordan and others want an increase in air strikes. that means washington committing

becky anderson has more. >> reporter: what is clear is that qatar can now continue to press on with building the stadium, by some estimates $200 billion being invested. but these projects come with repeated respects of deaths and accidents on the site. i'm told by sources in qatar the numbers are much likely higher even than those being reported. foreign workers in qatar now outnumber the local work force by nearly 20-1. and back in november the country acknowledged there have been problems saying "it is unacceptable that people in our country should be made to live and work in poor conditions." back then they promised to introduce new legislation to improve working conditions and replace what is known as the kafala sponsorship program for workers, saying that would be as early as 2015. described as a system of slavery in the 21st century. the last we heard from the labor and social affairs ministry was this -- "we expect to make announcements about new legislation by early next year." we not some changes have already been made. -- we understand some changes have already been made. different
