eric fisher is the chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station wbz. eric what's coming next? >> well, scott no one alive has seen this much snow in such a short amount of time in thes be area. the snow is three to five feet deep across much of the region, and there is not much rest between this storm ending tonight and the next one arriving on thursday. let's take a look at what we're tracking. basically another clipper system will move to the coast and deepen very rapidly as we head late into thursday and thursday night. it's going to be a close call. if it happens quickly and brings significant snow and wind right back into the same areas that are digging out. a little later further east, still plowable but not a major event. this is a big storm to watch because frankly the region cannot take more snow, certainly not a major storm. behind that clipper, the cold. this time the cold gets all the way into the deep south. we'll talking well below average temperatures all the way down the gulf coast into thursday and friday. that takes us into the weekend. so very little melting

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has more on the latest winter storm. >> well, yet another southern storm under way here as we head through the midweek. winter storm warnings stretching from texas right across to north carolina. this is going to put down some pretty significant snow. p it start this morning. snow breaking out around the dallas area and i a cross southern arkansas. by this evening it's tracking its way across mississippi, alabama, and georgia right around the commute time. birmingham, atlanta, right on the line. we could be talking significant snow in the city. certainly just north of both of those metros. and heading overnight the snow overspreads over north carolina. we'll see some of the biggest totals. it will be brushing the southern jersey area before it moves out to sea. snow totals, we start to see this dark blue. we're talking up to 6 inches of snow potentially. that's going to cause travel probables. you notice it comes right through the northern parts of mississippi, alabama, and georgia. here we could be talking over a half foot and certa

i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> this forecast is even more biting. jimmy the ground hog nipped the ear of the mayor of wisconsin. jimmy who disagrees with most of his ground hog brethren says spring will come early this year. >>> more than a dozen infants in southern california are under quarantine after a baby at their day care center came down with measles. the day care center at santa monica high school is closed after the infant was diagnosed. all of the children are unvaccinated because they're under the age of 1. since december more than 100 people in 14 states have been diagnosed with the highly contagious disease. the centers for disease control says the majority of measles patients are unvaccinated and now the debate over vaccinations are getting political. brian webb here in new york with more. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, alice alison. now presidential candidates are weighing in on whether parents should have a choice on vaccinating their children. on a three-day trip to england many say is meant to solidify his foreign

let's have a look at forecast now from eric fisher, chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz. eric, what's next? >> reporter: well, scott we've seen very significant snow for many areas here with this storm on president's day bringing up to a foot of snow just outside st. louis 8 inches in lexington plus a lot of freezing rain, memphis area and across southern tennessee causing a lot of issues. this snow moving up through the d.c. area tonight bringing some of the most significant snow they've seen there in quite a while, and some additional snowfall in southern new england where we've seen over 90 inches over the last three weeks. biggest totals tonight moving across virginia, the jackpot, at 12 to 18 additional inches. behind all this, arctic cold. it's not just the northeast but all of the central and eastern united states. as you look toward the mid-week high temps in chicago. same story in minneapolis and st. lucie stuck in the teens. that cold air moves into the southeast, as well and florida, northern florida, highs may not get out of the 30s. scott? >> pelley: eric fis

. >>> meteorologist eric fisher of wbz is following the storm and tracking the record-breaking snow totals. >> reporter: we have seen unprecedented snowfall in the boston area. we've broken records for 5 to 40-day totals. and the greatest 40-day total all-time was broken in just 17 days. unbelievable blitz of snow that's moved through. take a look at some of the totals from this storm. and the biggest totals have been in boston and the cities just off toward the south. the south shore, up to two feet of snow. by the time all is said and done early on in the morning, we could see a couple of those up around 30 inches. unbelievable. we are tracking another storm that's in the pipeline. this is for late thursday and into thursday night. if it develops quick enough and far enough we could, we could have another very significant snowstorm. a little farther east it's still plowable but more manageable. and really there is no where else to get a major snowstorm. everyone is aware we could have big totals. behind it we've got the cold. so elgts melting here. and this cold shot heads due south. we'

eric fisher is our chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station wbz. eric, what's next? >> scott, the cold and the snow has been relentless, and one of the bigger arctic pushes of air will be moving in this weekend. high temperatures in the single digits and subzero highs. by sunday, highs in the 40s in the florida panhandle, single digits and subzero numbers moving into the northeast. and along with all that cold a new storm. blizzard watches are up tonight, including much of maine and the coastal areas of new england. this is where we cold see the combination of heavy snows and very strong winds, the system moving in. it picks up on saturday night. the brunt is overnight and into sunday, and over a foot of snow is possible, and, scott, these are the same exact areas that have been shattering snow records the past three weeks. >> pelley: eric fisher, thanks. along the west coast, some of the world's busiest seaports are virtually shut down. shipping companies locked out union dock workers from seattle to san diego today. here's john blackstone. >> reporter: the containe

i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> meanwhile tensions between russia and ukraine are simmering this morning. hundreds of russian troops began military exercises in crimea today. that's ahead of tomorrow's scheduled peace talks in belarus. president obama is under increasing pressure to arm the ukrainians in their war with russian-backed separatists. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. german chancellor angela merkel briefed president obama on the peace talks yesterday. the president wants to wait to see how these talks turn out before he makes a decision on whether to send weapons into the ukraine government. now, chancellor merkel strongly opposes arming the ukraine's military. after meeting with the president she headed to canada, and there she said military means cannot solve the conflict. the fighting in ukraine has escalated. meanwhile, a previously negotiated truce has fallen apart. russian-backed separatists right now are outgunning the ukrainians. president obama says he has not yet made up his mind but that

. >>> meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking this morning's weathermaker. >> we've been watching this really potent storm move across the mid-south. impressive snow totals and a lot of ice. that icing for the morning hours across north carolina. the snow stretching up toward long island and new york city. limited amounts of snowfall there. you notice the brunt of the storm slides off to the south. but it will bring additional snowfall across southern new england, a place that's been shattering snowfall records. storm totals, you can see the biggest bull's-eye across virginia and west virginia. significant snow in d.c. haven't seen much in the last couple years. finally snow to deal with this morning. and we could see a few inches in the city of boston where we've already seen the snowiest february ever recorded. behind it it's all about the coldest week. middle of the country, all of the east, even down to florida seeing well below-average temperatures. as we head toward wednesday, thursday and friday, single-digit highs around the twin cities and chicago. st.

eric fisher is the chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station wbz. eric, what's coming next? >> well, scott, no one alive has seen this much snow in such a short amount of time in this boston area. the snow is three to five feet deep across much of the region and there is not much rest between this storm ending tonight and the next one arriving on thursday. let's take a look at what we're tracking. basically another clipper system will move to the coast and deepen very rapidly as we head late into thursday and thursday night. it's going to be a close call. if it happens quickly and brings significant snow and wind right back into the same areas that are digging out. a little later, further east, still plowable, but not a major event. this is a big storm to watch because frankly the region cannot take more snow, certainly not a major snow storm. behind that clipper, the cold. this time the cold gets all the way into the deep south. we'll talking well below average temperatures all the way down the gulf coast into thursday and friday. a that takes us into the weekend. so very l
