this is new england's fourth winter storm in less than a month. so all things considered we're doing okay ear in the philadelphia region. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news "today." i'm rosemary connors. it's just after 10:00 on this sunday. let's get right to our forecast with meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, looks like we've got a long week ahead, considering what we're dealing with this morning. >> we sure do. it's so cold this morning, we had the winds, and we're going to keep the cold in place. most of the workweek we rebound just a little bit, that's about it. a few chances for some snow. let's take a look outdoors. looking at brightening skies this morning. it is so cold that's the big weather story today. and we had a first alert weather day, with us through monday because we'll keep that cold air locked in place. and we're talking cold. we're talking temperatures in the single digits. talking windchills well below zero and winds whipping near 50 miles per hour at times. so could see additional power outages. we've already

the snow has moved off up in new england, parts of new york and that's what we'll see throughout the day. clearing skies. we'll actually see some sunshine today. by 8:00 mostly cloudy 13 degrees, a frigid start to the day. by 10:00, partly sunny, 14 and by noon we are looking at temperatures right around 14. you can see the temperatures pretty stable throughout the day. we're not going to see them climbing very far. we're going to see them hanging in the teens and those windchills below zero for many many today. we'll talk more about today's temperatures and possible record lows for tonight. we'll talk about that coming up. >> thanks michelle. the high winds aren't only making it dangerously cold they're also causing trees to fall on power lines and homes. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in philadelphia's east falls neighborhood. jesse, show us what's happening there. >> reporter: rosemary about an hour ago, the winds that michelle is talking about, well they split this large tree and a portion of it fell on to the roof. and now it's sitting on top of the roof of the empress building her

the worse by far in new england. the coldest i have right now is watertown, new york, at negative 24 windchills. but everybody is in the teens. even the low 20s. even as far south as philadelphia we're at negative 9. it's a very windy night out there. and the winds are biting. exposed skin is dangerous. kids at the bus stop that sort of thing. our blizzard watch up again. right along the coast. it's an eastern new england special including the boston area. saturday night into sunday winds could gust as high as 60 miles per hour. even if they only get 6 to 12 inches of snow even the snow on the ground is so light and fluffy, everything is going to be blowing all over the place. it's going to be a nightmare traveling. we're saying anywhere around 6 to 12 inches around boston but maine, is going to get nailed. we could see up to 2 feet. thomas, for valentine's day, notice how split the country is. everyone in the west texas, so many people are like seeing the best winter ever but not in new england. >> i'm predicting a

if you look at radar right now snow is filling in across southern new england. but there's also an arctic front. the line of heavier snow from new york state down to pennsylvania once that front passes through that's when we'll see winds pick up. the storm is going to strengthen by overnight and early sunday morning we're looking at very gusty winds, blizzard conditions blowing snow and whiteout conditions on the roads. so that storm is going to exit by early afternoon. but then the winds remain strong. so we're looking at lesser amounts now in boston, about six to nine inches of snow with the highest amounts up across down east maine especially eastern maine where we could end up with one to two feet. but even in southern new england where we're looking at three to four inches of snow it's the blowing snow that's still going to make it very very dangerous out on the roads. winds right now are already gusting up near 40 to 50 miles per hour back in places like the ohio river valley even down into north carolina we're seeing those gusty winds. and those will cont

they had a tough winter this morning through parts of new england. don't have much good news. cold temperatures continuing for a couple days and potential of more heavy snowfall through new england. take a look at the numbers well below zero in terms of windchill temperatures in places like minneapolis, chicago, believe land and single digits through parts of the southeast. at the end tomorrow morning some of the cold arctic air will move eastward and make things colder across the northeast. we will be looking at new records out there of 10 degrees below zero and single digits up and down the i 95 corridor. we one system tracking and the system is bringing heavy areas first impacting portions of the midwest as we wrap up this workweek of snow and potentially heavy systems out there. 500 pound meteor flying over pittsburgh pennsylvania. americans in new york, ohio, michigan and pennsylvania reported seeing it. nasa seeing fragments of the burnt out meteor like scattered through pennsylvania that might be a nice weekend project. see if we can find a piece of that meteor. >> that
