as the army of northern virginia drifts into the courthouse, the union cavalry under general custer has gotten in front of the confederate army, blocking the road they intend to use. the goal all along for robert lee is to get the army down. lee makes the terms to the south because union forces keep blocking the way but the union armies -- can't make the turn to the south because union forces keep blocking the way. this map shows the final battle which takes place on the morning of april 9. confederates initially pushed a union back but as reinforcements arrived they realize they cannot break through and the confederate army is surrounded on three sides of the river on the other side. lee and grant me that very afternoon of april 9. one of the things that makes the appomattox surrender you knew there is an active campaign and right up to the last minute there is fighting. we do not know who the last casualty was, there is probably no way to know because the fighting spread out across the village. one of the possible candidates is montgomery from pennsylvania, that is his photograph. as

most of northern virginia and most of southern maryland i think you will be fine tomorrow. don't worry too much about this. just keep it in the back of your mind. you might run into some slick roadways. it will be cold in the morning, around 2:00 here's our computer model, nothing out there during the day tomorrow. i really don't expect much. we may see some ice up to the north and this is the area with the best chance. frederick county virginia over towards frederick county maryland maybe baltimore. south of 66 and 50 i just don't see it happening during the day tomorrow. tomorrow night as warmer air moves in it should change over to shower activity. then everybody gets in on the rain. wednesday is going to be the day of transition again. you see a high temperature close to 52 degrees. plenty of rain during the day. maybe an inch of rain and then the cold air moves in and we could see a pretty good amount of snow wednesday night into thursday morning. so thursday morning could be problematic as far as rush hour and schools go once again. this is a system we'll have to watc

and that includes northern shenandoah valley, into west virginia. there may be some light icing especially on elevated surfaces. winchester up toward western maryland. east of there, another little batch just east of the blue ridge of some light icing in northwestern fauquier county south of there, just getting light rain. all of this tracking in to cold air around the metro area. as a result we have a large area under a freezing rain advisory from st. mary's and charles county up into prince william and stafford as well as far fax fairfax, loudoun, rappahannock. this is in effect until noon. so higher ridges is where there could be up to a tenth of an inch of icing on tree limbs. out ahead of that, temperatures in the metro area right in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees. it does look like we'll have above freezing temperatures when the rain is into prince william county loudoun and fairfax. and then by 9:00, it comes right into washington. by then, we should be in the mid to upper 30s. and then the rain tracks off to the north and east. and behind

back towards northern virginia we told you last night don't worry. this isn't going tock a big issue and it hasn't been. that's why the winter weather advisory was canceled for your region. but montgomery county gaithersburg columbia bowie, bethesda and rockville all areas see lg reports of ice continuing through the evening hours, down 301 and deal. the main roads will stay fine i think, as temperatures have been a little above freezing the last day or two. but many of the side roads, the sidewalks are also a problem. that's why we have that winter weather advisory in effect until 10:00. does include loudoun county fairfax county but not much more moisture back to the west. it's these counties in through portions of southern maryland and even parts of the district that still see that winter weather advisory until 10:00. look at all the moisture here. we've got a front to the north and then a lot of moisture making its way out of the gulf. first we're going to be on the warm side of this front so that means shower activity. early tomorrow morning her

just about everyone in northern virginia and back to the west starting to see the snow. maybe rain and mixture at first. everybody changes over to rain. washington leesburg and culpeper 9:00 a.m. that's when the snow will be coming down. fredericksburg lexington park you may stay all rain for this. so by noon we're on the better side of things. this will move out by 5:00 and change over to rain during the afternoon friday. the impacts come in the morning. one to two inches around d.c. annapolis and waldorf. two to three around gaithersburg toward baltimore. but it's almost all an the grassy surfaces. we think we'll have some impact but washington rockville, annapolis, woodbridge almost no impact on your roads. moderate impact around montgomery county. ooum not really worried about fairfax county d.c. may be some delays but not a whole lot. this is what we're going to be watching. will those temperatures get closer to freezing. right now temperatures staying above freezing and we're not too worried about the roadways early friday. most accumulation will be on grass. 39 on

northern virginia reporter david culvert just shot the accident on sunset hills roeld. he joins us live from wheelie avenue. what are you seeing? >> reporter: jim, this happened about a mile from where we're standing. we wanted to come here to bring you that video, my photographer and i. we're down sunset hills road. we should first tell you the plow truck that is involved here the driver crews on scene told me he was take on the hospital and he should be okay. now to that video. take a look at this. here's what we saw as we pulled up to sunset hills road. you can see police they had it blocked off. notice here the salt and sand truck turned over in the ditch. it's on its side. the entire load of that salt and sand spilled over. crews there trying to figure out how to get it turned upright. so the contractors start hooking up these yellow straps. then they bring in this front-end loader. it starts tugging, hoping it will turn over but the weight just too much. the straps they snapped. and you can watch again as they try and try, but it doesn't seem to get it to turn ove
