. >> and our team coverage continues with nbc 10's george spencer. he's live at temple university hospital where some of the passengers are being taken tonight. george? you seeing a lot of activity there? >> reporter: yeah jim, this is a hospital that is clearly an emergency management mode right now. take a look at the end of this block, you can see philadelphia police have this entire stretch of germantown avenue shut down. and back in these live pictures at the bottom of the emergency entrance here you can see the emergency room doctors and nurses actually waiting outside for incoming patients here. in the hour that we've been on this scene, we have seen mostly philadelphia police vans transporting the victims. those victims have been brought here in groups of four five at a time. we've watched many of them loaded right out of the back of those police vans into wheelchairs and other stretchers. there was really no way for us to keep count during the time we've been out here but the number of injured at this hospital, alone, appears to be more than

george spencer is live where a man found that body while walking his dog. george. >> reporter: witnesses say that body may have been there for days, possibly even weeks. ooze as the temperatures heated up the stench coming from the suitcase led police right to this mystery. >> there's a stench. it's right there. see that brown spot. >> you saw it out there? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: walking his dogs jim martin led us right to the center of this case. the roadside spot where he noticed a large brown suitcase in the weeds as if it fell from the back of a truck. he said he should have trusted his first instinct. >> then i smell a smell. you mentally think something then you're like it's my imagination. >> reporter: this afternoon another resident also walking his dogs here notified police. once investigators got to the scene, they unzipped the suitcase and found the body of a man in his 20s stuffed inside. >> it's scary. you just don't know. very very scary to think about that. >> too close to home in. >> it is. >> reporter: the back road is just below the air

. >> george spencer is life tonight. george, the victim helped track down the suspect? >> reporter: yeah, he did. but only after confirming that he and his daughter were not actually injured. the driver told investigators he was actually entering i-95 here when he accidentally cut off another driver sparking what he thought was a shootout. from sky force 10 you can see the entrance ramp is long and somewhere on this stretch around 9:00 last night, investigators say a young father feared her his life and his daughters when a raging driver 18-year-old william henderson allegedly pulled a gun. >> unfortunately this world is coming to a lot of violence and rage. it's very scary. >> reporter: the have victim told the police that he just picked up his two-year-old girl from a sitter and was headed home to philly. he said he accidentally cult off the driver in a merge. and then the other vehicle pulled up beside his anpointed a handgun at him. the driver fired one round and the father immediately slowed thinking he had been hit. >> i think it's crazy. you never know what could

george spencer is live tonight. police say they think the woman saw something but they're not sure what. >> reporter: i'm told the witness was very credible. she was on the way to the gym the morning. she saw the investigators she saw the man holding what appear to be a baby in a blanket and then leaning over the edge of the bridge as if to drop it. that's where the investigation was focused. >> that section of the bridge. >> reporter: this neighborhood john reeves watched investigators working here for hours. and right now their best clue the is this surveillance video of the couple walking and holding hands minutes after a passer-by thinks she saw the man drop a baby off the bridge a block away. >> one thing i hurt is anybody hurt a kid or a female. >> reporter: the witness was driving across the bridge around 11:00 this morning. she told police as she passed she saw the woman cradling the light skinned baby and even noticed the child's fuzzy hair. but what happened next terrified her. >> she saw the male take the

nbc10's george spencer live at the scene. you learned there are several possible explanations? >> yeah jim, experts tell me that these engineers really know their routes almost as well as you or i know our own drive way. more than 24 hours later, you can see in our live pictures that the investigative scene is still active and right now, experts are focusing their attention on the engineers experience his condition and whether distraction could have played a role. >> trains come past this way or go this way? >> retired railroad signal foreman knows this stretch of tracks. for 45 years, he's lived across from it a long straightaway just before the curve, where the amtrak train derailed. with engineer brandon bostian at the controls investigators say. most trains passion cautiously preparing for that turn. you're used to seeing them already slow down here? >> oh, yeah they're either slowed down or coming to a slowdown to get into that curve. >> late today, federal investigators confirmed last night's train was traveling at 106 miles an hour as it entered the 50 mile an hour curve

nbc 10's george spencer live at abington hospital. both women in remarkably good condition. >> reporter: that's right, jacqueline especially for a crash they say bounced them around like a ping-pong ball. that daughter is still recovering at this hospital tonight, and when i spoke to her by phone she sounded like a survivor who almost could not believe she is still alive. >> looked at my mom and i looked at me and i just we're alive. and i just thought, this is absolutely miraculous. >> reporter: miraculous indeed, as these images from skyforce10 attest. an 18-wheeler fully atop the mazda sports car it just hit, and beneath it all, this woman, 55-year-old cathrenia moening, somehow still alive and conscious. her 78-year-old mother right next to her. the moment of the crash itself seared into their minds. >> i thought anything could happen at that point, but when the car stopped, i looked at her, i looked at me and thought, this is miraculous. >> reporter: this was an inch by inch rescue. >> correct, correct. >> reporter: george was am

george spencer live at temple university, george? >> jim, so far so good here as we have not seen any more new arriving patients. but it's clear officials are not certain they're out of the woods yet. take a look further north here on germantown avenue. you can see philadelphia police still have this roadway blocked off. still prepared for the arrival of any additional victims and other passengers as those secondary searches continue even now. and as we pan back towards the bay of the emergency room here, you can still see the scattering of hospital beds. probably eight to ten hospital beds. and then perhaps just as many wheelchairs over to the right, still waiting for any additional victims that may be arriving here. we have been told by the hospital already that this hospital has accommodated about two dozen of the victims related to this derailment. we have seen numerous family members trickling in here, hoping to be reunited with their loved ones, only to be told that they need to head over to the waiting room, actually, while th

george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> george we know you'll keep us updated on the conditions thank you. and let's recap all of this for you. four philadelphia police officers were injured today by a man who used his car as a weapon right here. during a hit-and-run crime spree. they are all at einstein hospital. they are expected to be okay as you heard from george. this all began at 2:15 this afternoon when police arrived in olney where a car had hit a wall. police tell us the driver got out of hiss vehicle, was incoherent, they thought, and then fought with officers. the driver escaped in his car, ran over three officers. a few blocks away the driver hit another officer. and that's where police shot the suspect in the chest. the man still managed to keep driving. he was arrested about 2 miles away in the 1900 block of colonial street. that suspect is now in critical condition. we have reporters covering the latest developments on how all of this happened. right now, nbc 10 investigative reporter harry hairston is talking to people who saw it all unfold. harry will join us ahead on nbc

george spencer discovered it brought together two parents in an unlikely way. >> when they say a picture is worth a thousand words, this is what they mean. local photographer joe kashmiric captured three of philly's finest rushing from the scene carrying an injured victim unable to walk. in the midst of all of this chaos, rescuers did what they were trained to do. one of them, the officer on the far right of the foe foe is julian atkinson's son. she wrote that's my son on the right, #callofduty. great job raising a true hero. and there's nothing like a philly cop. but one particular comment from a stranger five hours later stood out. quote, thank you for having such a wonderful caring son. he's carrying our son. give him our undying thanks. it was a poignant virtual meeting of a mother of a rescuer and the father of a man he rescued. it was a message of gratitude that could probably be repeated 200-plus times one for each of the derailment's survivors. >> as best we can tell that victim and his father are from new york. the officer's mother is from philly. we talked to her tonight and sh

george spencer is live at einstein medical center where the officers and the suspects were being treated. >> what kind of activity have you seen where you are? >> jim, it has been in and out, city leaders say this is a crime with an unusual weapon that car used to injure those four officers. the latest and best information that we have is that the officers are suffering from non-life threatening injuries. they are banged up but we're told in good spirits. . from overhead earlier, we saw one of those injured officers being transported on a stretcher being brought to einstein medical center. almost immediately after, commissioners showed up here. the four officers suffering from back, leg and arm injuries. and one of the officers is undergoing a c.a.t. scan right now. >> fortunately, an indication of some of the dangers that philadelphia police officers encounter out on the streets of our city trying to do their job, trying to make sure the city is safe all four injured by one individual in a car and used a car as a weapon. >> as for the medical condition of that suspect, the suspect is al

george spencer live in evening in bristol township. how did this all unfold? >> jim, we're just piecing that together, really with the criminal complaint we just got from district court. the victim says it all began when he accidentally cut off another driver as he was driving this entrance ramp to i-95 last night. and his little daughter was right there in the car with him. that victim had apparently just picked up the young girl from her sitter and was headed home to philly. after accidentally cutting off that other driver the victim says that driver pulled up right next to his car pointed a gun, and then fired a shot. leaving the man terrified that he or his daughter had actually been hit. when he realized that they were both okay though he followed the driver and helped police pull him over. in that car, we're told police found a starter pistol meaning that the shot was likely a loud sound from a realistic looking gun, but that there was likely no projectile. once police actually pulled over that driver, they say the driver admitted to it. and they arreste

george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> other crews fanned out on this story. let's go to where the one-man crime spree ended. >> harry hairston is live in west oak lane in the 1900 block of colonial. harry? >> this is where police say it all ended. you can see the investigators on the scene now. they've been looking at the car, the suspect's car. you can see on the passenger car where it has been damaged, apparently from what happened with the earlier events that were taking place here. we still do not know why the individual came to this location. but i am told by various people in the neighborhood that they all know who the suspect was, the man that was shot that they've seen him and cannot believe that he was involved in anything such like this. they're telling me, he did have some type of medical condition, some type of operation. right now, we're trying to vet out what the individual's name is and contact family members. all ended here a short time ago. crime scene investigators are on the scene. they're dusting the car down and they are taking whatever e

. >> joining me now is msnbc reporter george spencer at temple university hospital. what is the latest that you can tell us? >> reporter: this is -- thanks for having me. this is north philadelphia hospital, a pretty urban hospital where more than two dozen of the victims, the survivors of this amtrack train crash have been brought tonight. we've been here since about 10:00, rushed here shortly after the derailment happened and i think the most interesting thing that we have watched, from our vantage point on the ground was the number of philadelphia police vans that showed up here with injured passengers from the amtrack train piled in the back of a police van. these victims didn't show up at the hospital in many cases, in traditional ambulances. they were piled up often three, four, five people in there and we watched them unload here right into wheelchairs and stretchers to be rushed into the emergency room for treatment. it gives you a sense of the urgency that first responders had getting many of these victims away from the actual crash scene to this hospital wh
