once the mourning period ends for kenny stabler i think a lot of smiles are going to come to the faces of all us who knew him, who played with him. when i started here in 1979 i got to cover him. and just a couple things that stand out, one of the things i saw, the raiders had this kicker and he missed a 13, 14- yard field goal which would have won the game for the raiders and after the game everybody was in the locker room surrounding this poor guy. 5'5" and they crammed microphones in his faces, and kenny stabler, i will never forget this, came by and said leave him alone. if i hadn't had a lousy game he wouldn't have had to make that kick in the first place. i will answer all your questions. he did. totally took the pressure off this rookie kicker. it was one of those things that typified the guy he was. and he was soft spoken. a tough guy but if you met him he always spoke softly and he would remember your name. one autograph event, he was signing one autograph after another and every fan felt the need say i was at this game and he acted like he had never heard that story again. lo
