me and my wife caught a plane to atlanta. we were in atlanta, and then the very next day, we are seeing on the news that this was a serious storm, category 5, coming directly at new orleans. that was when i called my son and other family members and said, you need to get out, and get out now. as i was talking about this earlier, our entire baquet family, not cousins or anything, but our entire direct link baquet family ended up in atlanta. about 17 of us stayed at my daughter's house. terry and his family, my kids and grandkids -- everybody was there. in my brother -- and my brother and his wife, children and grandchildren. they came too. we didn't have enough room for them. they stayed a mile and a half away from where my daughter lived. they didn't come back, and didn't plan on coming back. host: how long did that period last when everyone was crowded together? terry: it wasn't very long. went down to atlanta, and then from atlanta went right across the state to savanna georgia. sherman never intended to come to augusta. that is well documented and he wrote an editorial to the local paper saying, i never wanted to come, i never intended to come but we made sure that you thought we were going to come. but lieutenant sherman was actually stationed here very early in his career. the reason i do not think he came here is because there was a full garrison here. it would not have been on a direct route. he basically had two routes that he was taking. he would have had to make a major detour to come to augusta. what is my conclusions and i inc. augusta suffered even more by not having him come here than if he had. all of those people that were fleeing, where were they go? augusta, georgia. all of the prisoners were still coming through, all of the wounded were still coming in. the shortage of supplies was huge. people were starving. hospitals were full about churches started to fill with the wounded. there was a lot of things going on in a guster that had a major im
