this is erika. it has been moving straight to the west. you can see the track of it. so now it does look like it will go south of puerto rico and then is it going to hit this very mountainous island where haiti and dominican republic are? it's got 45 miles an hour winds now. so one of the possibilities is that it goes very close to puerto rico, weakens some more, continues in that direction which would put it right over the mountains of hispaniola here. that causes friction. that helps rip the storm apart. then there's cuba. cuba's got big mountains, too. so if it takes that track, going over those three islands, it may not make it. however, if it manages to end up north of hispaniola, it's going into very warm water, the other conditions are going to become more favorable, and then we have a chance of a hurricane threat to florida. the possible tracks according to the different computer models, some of them taking it now even toward the west coast of florida but very few are going far enough to the east to not affect the united states. the latest forecast from the hu

erika has been downgraded to a low pressure system. this not before leaving behind a trail of destruction in the caribbean. erika is also blamed for killing at least a dozen people. but florida not quite out of the woods yet. audrey puente has the latest on erika's track from the weather center this evening. audrey: erika has been downgraded significantly to just an area of low pressure. it is still sort of wreaking havoc across the caribbean idol. moving over cuba bringing rain across that part of the nation and moving northeastward or northwest ward north into parts of florida as we go into the rest of the weekend. most likely center will pass to the west coast herl. but it is providing some rainfall already across south florida and it will continue to do so as question go through the next several days. wase take a look at the cloud deck we're expecting cloudy skies after the next several days and just a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. now some of those could cause minor flooding across the state but overall we're not

erika has had a tough time in the atlantic east of the islands today, still a tropical storm. the last couple of hours notice those darker cloud tops? that's a sign of taller thunderstorms shooting near the center of erika. so perhaps erica will maintain itself. that's what the hurricane center thinks. we've got tropical storm warnings up toward antigua and barbuda, the virgian islands and puerto rico. thursday at 8:00 we're talking as it goes toward anguilla and toward the virgian islands thursday evening. after this when it gets into the central and northern bahamas, it does have a better environment. so if it survives the next couple days and there's a possibility it won't, it could make a beeline for somewhere off the florida coast as we head in toward monday afternoon. you notice in five days out the spread of accuracy is 240 miles. so that's a long way to be off. got to watch it, no time to panic yet but definitely to watch. 55 to 65 with a few spots cooler, a real nice night. tomorrow a superb day for august or september. we start in the 50s and 60s, get to the upper 70

they'll be dealing with erika. erika has 50 mile-an-hour winds. it just increased again, back up to 50 miles an hour with movement to the west/northwest. that's at 17 miles an hour. that takes erika right past the dominican republic. that's by this time tomorrow morning. and then 24 hours later, early sunday morning, it will be impacting the bahamas passing just to the north of cuba. and then it looks like it's heading for south florida. the latest update, just updated information, keeps it as a tropical storm, not becoming a hurricane. once it reaches land in south florida, then it will weaken even more as it moves into interior florida. 60ç mile-an-hour winds early monday morning. by early tuesday morning it's down to 50 miles an hour. even though it's not going to be a hurricane, it still brings tremendous rainfall to those areas that it will hit. for us, sunshine, low humidity, back into the lower 80s today. tomorrow, a bit warmer. humidity stays low. 88 fwrez in the afternoon. then here comes the heat that jessica asked for, 91 on sunday, i

tropical storm erika has already killed at least 12 people in the caribbean before barreling into puerto rico. nbc's janet shamlian is in san juan. she starts us off tonight. >> reporter: devastation on the tiny island of dominica. 12 dead, as many as 20 missing after more than a foot of rain from tropical storm erika triggered mudslides and flooding. turning roads into rivers. [ screaming ] and wiping out some structures altogether. in the aftermath communities littered with debris and people in shock. 80% of the island was left without power, and much of the fresh water supply cut off. puerto rico was next in erika's path. the island closed up and prepared for the worst. gusting winds, downed trees, and power lines. cutting electricity to its southern side. but the capital of san juan was largely spared. in the dominican republic the storm took aim once again. a glancing blow that toppled trees and destroyed property. and now tonight florida is under a state of emergency. >> pay attention, folks, because you're going to see some significant changes now. >> reporter: it's been ten years

jeff, despite the fact that tropical storm erika has broken apart, the state's emergency activation center remains in operation tonight. thank you. for more on all of this rewith join the by eric fisher chief meteorologist in our boston station wbz. eric, what are you looking at? >> reporter: we're watching this trp call moisture from northward. though it is not organized, a lot of that moisture meeting up with a frontal boundary focus the tropical moisture into heavy rainfall. flash mooding-- flash flooding. the main issue across georgia and through south carolina. local totals could be over five inches of rain and that is why we are concerned with those areas. in the pas civic something never observed before. we saw three major hurricanes all spinning at once east of the "dateline", only impact here rough surf for hawaii, especially the northern shore. so good news on that front. meanwhile on the lower 48, this week is about the heat. some are holding on 80s, 90s, for much of the midwest, northeast, 90s. new york city, jeff, looks like this will go all the way through the labor day weeke
