i'm frank mallicoat. the department says the unusual move is to help clear up misinformation. kpix 5's anne makovec saw the videos. >> reporter: the police only invited, quote, major media outlets to view these videos. they didn't allow to us take in any recording equipment. all we can do was take notes. the first video oakland police presented showed what happened as they shot and killed nate wilkes last week after a high- speed chase in a stolen car. the robbery suspect crashed at 27th and northgate. that's when the foot chase began and that is where the video picked up the story. it was difficult to see what was happening. the body camera mounted on the officer's chest jolted up and down as he ran. you could hear officers yelling drop the gun and sirens. in and out of frame you could city a man running down the sidewalk. he did appear to turn around and head back toward officers. officers say he was holding this gun. but the only image of a gun in the video was a shadow. in that image it's not pointed directly at the officer. >> i think they have to stop and directly extend

i'm maria medina. >> i'm frank mallicoat. it is "hump day." good morning. it's 5:00. >>> the hunt continues for a third man suspected in a homicide at an office building in san jose. police have now released chilling surveillance video of the moments before the crime. kiet do is in san jose with more from investigators and the family of the suspect killed by police. >>> reporter: police have released that surveillance footage and say it shows the chilling moments just before the homicide on lundy avenue from exactly one week ago. now, in that footage you can see those suspects arming themselves with tec-9 style type weapons as they creep around a corner. the victim 38-year-old christopher wrenn runs into the gunmen. then puts his hands up. police said it was an ambush and described the actual killing as horrific. >> the suspects were running after and intimidating and terrorizing the victim. >> reporter: police identified two of the three men in the video as 29-year-old matthew castillo and 40-year-old richard jacquez. police shot and killed castillo sunday

i'm frank mallicoat. we begin with breaking news in oakland. a fire forced more than a dozen people on to the streets. kpix 5's lisa chan joins us from international boulevard and 8th avenue. lisa, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, about 15 to 20 people are completely displaced this morning. some of them are walking around with nothing but a red cross blanket to keep them warm. the fire broke out this morning at international at 2:30 this morning. it started in some apartments above commercial stores here on international. the fire spread across an alley to a duplex on 8th street. this is an old building in a densely populated area which provided challenges for firefighters. >> it's a dense area. we have a lot of people that live in this area and with that, we tend to find we have people that are living in commercial spaces living in the residential spaces. and then the fact that the city of oakland has old buildings. you have footprints of the buildings that have changed. stores that you think lead to a certain spot don't lead to the ri

i'm frank mallicoat. >> good morning. i'm maria medina. >>> to the latest on this morning's breaking story at the bay bridge, an intense search for a person in bay waters. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from the scene with an update. anne. >> reporter: as far as we know this woman is still in the water. the water is very cold in the bay and this woman also likely has injuries from her fall off the bike path a couple of hours ago. if she does not turn up on her own within the next hour or so, the coast guard is sending up another helicopter at daybreak. in the meantime, they have a boat in the water. they have officers posted along the shoreline hoping this woman will turn up on her own. this started with a car crash. only one vehicle involved in that crash. it was on the eastbound lanes of the bridge. officers approached the car and they found one passenger and two others walking away. they had jumped a railing on to the bike path when an officer approached them. the woman who they think was the driver was hanging on

i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6 on the nose right now. we are going to take a live look at the golden gate bridge as folks are coming in to work. not too crowded. let's check in on the morning commute. >> sure. why not, right? let's get to you work this morning. if you are planning on taking anywhere near 580 the altamont pass, we can expect some brake lights busier than usual. a lot of those back roads are closed because of the "tesla fire." so expect some extra busy conditions on 580 itself. a lot of folks using that instead this morning. westbound seeing brake lights coming way from 205 right at the merge too. we are hearing of some debris. there is a ladder in the roadway slowing you down as you work your way westbound there through the altamont pass. tesla road and corral hollow road are closed because of the fire so do plan for that this morning. once you get past that mess towards the dublin interchange, a little bit better but still sluggish on the westbound side. eastbound not too bad. the antioch bridge some delays this morning.

frank mallicoat is on off this afternoon. the entire incident caught on camera has a lot of people talking this afternoon. kpix 5's cate cauguiran spoke to police who tell us their side of the story. >> reporter: this video has been viewed tens of thousands of times you can see san francisco police officers holding down a man near civic center plaza. >> oh my god. >> what are you doing? >> reporter: the woman who recorded the video says it's what officer -- it went 30 minutes and claimed this was police harassment. we checked in with san francisco police and officers say they didn't take him down but that the man fell. >> he was waving sticks around. and the 911 caller was concerned for the person's safety as well as the safety of others. >> reporter: the man had one prosthetic leg and claimed the sticks were his crutches. but police say they were in fact sticks but couldn't show them to us. >> he ran into traffic. and said he did not care whether or not he was going to be hit by a car. based on his actions we believed the su

good afternoon, i'm brian hackney in for frank mallicoat. >> i'm maria medina. let's go straight to our breaking news. kpix 5's da lin explains the chain of events. da. >> reporter: yeah. the police officer is also in stable condition. police officers closed off quite a few blocks around here near this lake merritt neighborhood as they gather information about how the officer-involved shooting happened. about 8:30 someone called 911 to report an assault and dispute at macarthur boulevard. the female officer was the first person to get here. once the officer found the suspect, they say the man attacked her, hitting her in the face and head. that's when the officer shot the suspect. a neighbor tells me he woke up to three gunshots and it appears quite a few people witnessed the clash between the suspect and officer. >> the suspect attacked the officer with a metal object. the officer has been transported to a local hospital where she has suffered head trauma. >> reporter: doctors are treating the officer at highland hospital where she is in serious condition. this

hi everyone and good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. maria medina is on assignment this afternoon. the president is asking his aides to stay in close touch with california's governor and local officials in extended gratitude to the men and women that are battling the fire. cbs reporter chris martinez is at the fire in lower lake with the very latest. >> reporter: the rocky wildfire is quickly tearing its way through heavy brush and multiple directions. blackening more than 101 square miles. >> this area has never burned before. so the fire is extremely dense and extremely dry. and so that's really fueling pun intended the fire. >> reporter: the wildfire has destroyed at least 50 homes and other buildings. flames yum -7d this highway that was acting as a vital containment line. despite the fire's advance no other homes burned but the 13,000 residents who were ordered to leave remain on edge. >> it's tough. thinking you know i could come back homeless. but once again, you know as long as i'm okay, life goes on. >> reporter: crews say their biggest challenge is the shifting winds in t

i'm frank mallicoat. anne makovec joins us in the newsroom right now with more go governor brown's washing. >> reporter: the "rocky fire" is 40% contained. but governor brown warned that the fire season is just beginning, made worse by climate change and he says this fire represents the, quote, new normal. >> this is a real wake-up call because of the way this fire performed. it's, um, not the way it usually has been, going lots of different directions, moving fast, even without hot winds. >> reporter: almost 70,000 square miles have burned, portions of highway 16 and 20 are still closed. some evacuations are being lifted today but firefighters are only beginning to assess the damage. on july 20, this 20-acre fire flared in bay point, eight days later a smaller fire, then later a hillside scorched off highway 24. at the time, firefighters did not say they believed it was the work of the same serial arsonist. >> we needed to keep that secret so that we could catch this person. the one thing we didn't want

i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm maria medina. breaking news over in oakland, a suspect is dead and an officer is now in the hospital and in surgery after a gun battle on martin luther king jr. way. kpix 5's lisa chan is at the scene near the macarthur b.a.r.t. station with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well the shooting happened out here on the sidewalk. the oakland police public information officer says that this is still a very new and active investigation. police responded to the 3800 block of mlk at 1:32 this morning. they were investigating a sexual assault that led them to a suspect. who was armed with a rifle. >> suspect presented himself with a rifle. shot at the officers, one of the officers was struck by gunfire. both officers returned fire. with multiple officers at the scene. but both officers returned fire. >> reporter: we heard about 30 shots were exchanged. the officer and suspect were both transported to the hospital. the suspect was pronounced dead. the officer was in surgery and we ju
