our ellison barber is in gaithersburg with details on what we've learned tonight. ellison? >> reporter: derek, when that explosion happened, one person was injured, a police officer who worked here at nist. prosecutors tell me that is the same man who is now facing a felony charge for making meth. this single page document was filed in u.s. district court sometime monday. it charges christopher bartley, a former supervisor rei police officer at nist with knowingly -- supervisory police officer at nist with knowingly trying to manufacture a mixture containing an amount of methamphetamine on or around july 18th. that's the same day an explosion happened inside a building on the institute's gaithersburg campus. as that explosion was investigated, officials say they found substances used to make meth. nist is one of the oldest science laboratories in the country and it's run by the federal government. two days after the explosion this e-mail was sense to a congressional committee that oversees the institute. an official passed along information to montgomery county police expla
