riis park saturday afternoon searching for 5-year-old gray. beachgoers say the boy was with family when he somehow managed to slip away. >> like parents a lot of people from on the beach -- the beachgoers, was looking for him. >> reporter: police say an on duty lifeguard eventual he located the small child in the water. and brought him to shore. but when medics arrived he was unconscious and unresponsive. >> they were trying hard to revive him and they were unsuccessful. they brought him to the boardwalk. tried again. tried to keep his -- he was lifeless. >> they put him on a stretcher. and they were trying to revive him. they really tried. but it was too late. >> reporter: after several attempts to revive him on scene, med i thinks rushed the boy to brook dale hospital where he was later pronounced dead. the sudden and tragic loss now has many offering their condolences to the family and questioning if more could have been done to prevent this. >> i think it's terrible because there are lifeguards here. >> i think it's awful. i have an 8-year
