james holmes hears his sentence from a divided jury. from cnn world headquarters here in atlanta, i'm george howell. this is "cnn newsroom." good day to you and welcome to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. we start this hour with a strong typhoon that is hitting taiwan as we speak. right now, typhoon soudelor is bringing strong winds and heavy rains. this strong storm is moving right now toward china. according to taiwan's central news agency, four people are dead, four people are still missing. two people were killed before the storm even made landfall on friday. a 7-year-old girl and her mother both swept to sea along with the girl's twin sister. she is still missing. this powerful storm has triggered mudslides and flooding. roughly 2 million homes remain without power. at this hour, we have a storm-chaser on the ground who joins us by phone. james reynolds is there. james, thank you for being with us. just talk to us about what you're seeing right now. >> well, it's been a very long and arduous day traveling

the jury reaching a verdict in the penalty phase for the convicted shooter james holmes. we expect that verdict to be read roughly about 90 minutes from now. the same jurors who decided holmes' guilt has decided whether he should live or die for killing 12 people and injuring doz zepszens three years ago. if jurors decide holmes should be put to death, the decision must be unanimous. joining me now msnbc scott cohen in centennial colorado. scott, i understand the verdict, as i said 90 minutes away. what's the general reaction from people hearing that they are back and they are ready to reveal what their thoughts are? >> well, word is filtering in thomas. and we just heard from scott larimer, father of the shooting victim john larimer, arriving at court right away. it took about 2 1/2 hours of deliberation for this phase but we don't know what that means because the way that this system works in colorado in this particular phase of the sentencing, the jury has to decide unanimously that aggravating factors, the heinousness of the crime outweigh the mitt greating factors li

james holmes could take the stand but we are not expecting that. closing arguments could happen tomorrow and this could be in the hands of the jurors if he gets life in prison or the death penalty. >> the judge is trying to walk a fine line and not let the emotional testimony become too emotional. where do you draw the line? those are heartbreaking words coming from the family members. >> reporter: we are seeing the teenage girl who lost her 53-year-old father has broken down and the defense attorney asked for a conference at the bench because of the fact they are worried about the jury becoming overcome with their own emotions and having the case be decided by emotion rather than the facts. every time they get to the edge the witness' question has to be pulled back and ask different types of question to keep the person on the stand poise. we are seeing emotions from the jurors and people in the courtroom tearing up from the emotional testimony from the fact of how they found out about their loved one dying and the pain that lingered over the years
