three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan takes a look at back to school by the numbers. >> back to school shopping season typically second only to holiday shopping in terms of consumer spending. but, survey by retailers finds consume remembers expected to hold back this year. the national retail federation finds americans planning to spend on average $630.36 on their back to school needs. that's a drop of almost $39 from last year. retailers say, there are simply some back to school items that don't need to be purchased every single year. that is one reason their survey anticipates a drop in electronic spending, for example. the survey also found consumers not in a big rush to start shopping compared with previous years. the percentage of families getting started at least two months before the start of the school year dipped this year. about 30% will wait until one or two weeks before school, hoping for last minute deals. about 98 bucks will be spent for school supplies, like notebooks, pencils, back packs, that's the second highest amount spent on those supplies since the reces
