we talked commodity, jim. we talked china. we haven't talked caterpillar which is a name i believe you revealed publicly pour the first time you were short a couple years ago at our delivering alpha event. are you still short the name? >> we are still short the name. it's down, but not down a lot. it had a run up to 100 and something and roll back over. it's the same problem, scott. it's the commodity super cycle. i would just point out that in 2000, the entire global mining industry spent about $14 billion a year on capital spending, everybody. and in 2012 at the peek, global mining capex was $125 billion. it went up exponentially over those 12 years. caterpillar right at the top of the market. we're going to be working off backlogs of construction, mining, oil and gas for years. this is not a few quarter phenomenon. and i think all the heavy equipment guys are basically going to have the wind in their face for the next handful of years. >> you told us at the very top of the program today that china is much worse than you thi

jim: absolutely. lower commodity prices are good for the 80% of the economy that is not commodity producers. the consumer recovery is very slow. we saw that last week with the employment cost data. but it is happening. tois consistent with a 2% 2.5% economy. tom: it is amazing how jim a coffin -- how jim mccall henan can dojim mccaughan that. brendan: we have given up talking about demand for oil. justyou are saying is, like the dynamics of oil, they are changed and they cannot turn off the faucet. jim: absolutely. copper, all the miners were spending tens of millions of dollars building these big mines. vonnie: what sort of job losses will we see from these commodities? jim: that is an interesting question because the commodity sector has been the negative piece of the u.s. job market. the way i look at it is that the losses precede recovery elsewhere, as commodity users have better times. vonnie: most of it is going to be people living in trailers that are quite happy to up and move the next day. ji

jim: yes. olivia: at what point is that going to, like during the crisis, is that going to bring down business and consumer sentiment as well? jim: to a degree. i think the context in which we view the events of the past, week, two weeks, month is that something returning to normal rather than something abher yebt. financial monetary policy is abearant. what has been unusual is the ie -- ear restability of markets. -- eerie stability of markets. that's kind of the great snooze. ne must ask why markets are so seemingly happy to stagnate. i think this also gets back to monetary policy. when people expect the fed to be there, when that he expect zero percent rates to exist, stop reading the footnotes, stop reading the documents, security analysis falls into disuse. people tend to go for momentum theories of market action. they watch constantly and federal reserve and listen to what it's saying. olivia: if the fed does hold off in september, how do they justify that with an economy that grew 3.7%?

jim: it is certainly possible. my guess is -- i have been expecting a full correction for some time. i think this s&p 500 might find itself in the 1800's at some point. low, youf it finds a will see a lot of people buying on the dip. it has been a popular approach. it has worked well for three years. i think you will see that. the issue would be if the buyers by on the dip and it fails again, there could be more panic on the secondary fail. i think we are headed in that direction. whether we do that in september, i don't know. if we get around 1900 with earnings next year of $120, there's good support around 16 times earnings. that would be about where it would come in at. i would not be surprised. i think we are overflowing the commodity collapse. i think we are closer to the end blowoffand an emotional than anything else. i would expect global growth will bounce on the backdrop of considerable stimulus applied for lower yields, lower energy costs, weaker currencies. i think we get a global bounce more likely than

jim: i like bonds. pimm: what kind? corporate bonds? jim: treasury bonds. the risk off trade has another leg down. treasuries were a tremendous performer last year and are outperforming this year. they had outperformed stocks for 18 years in a row, the last 18 years cumulatively. pimm: where in the yield curve? jim: grand of the yield curve. i think we might hit a bout of instability. it world economies are slowing, whether it is japan, china or europe. that combined with yields in europe pushing money out of here pushes our rates down. i don't think we're done going down yet. i know everybody else thinks that but i will take the contrarian view that rates are going to head lower. betty: are you staying away from commodities too? jim: commodities are a measure haverld demand or you negative gdp in japan, port numbers out of europe. china is saying they are growing at 7% come but nobody believes it. if they are going out less -- if they are growing at less than 26%, that would be a low. maybe some commodities are ahead of the curve, crude oil has got a way t

jim cavanaugh, stay with us. just to sort of reset if you're just tuning in, we are getting reports of a gunman entering a theater outside of nashville, tennessee. it was during a showing of the film "mad max." this gunman did engage in a fire fight with police officers. the gunman is now deceased. it is unclear if there were any casualties as a result of this fire fight. if anyone was hurt, we do not know at this time. of course, when that information becomes available to us, we'll update you. as of right now, the bomb squad of this police department is there on the scene because the gunman was armed with a firearm and a hatchet. two bags with him. one on him and one left in the theater or dose to the theater and trying to qufigure out if there's explosives in the bags to be problematic for law enforcement and civilians in the area. so we'll dip back into the local coverage. wsmv for the latest on the incident. stay with us here on msnbc. we have national correspondents looking into this and as soon as we get mo
