. >>> let's bring in lonnie quinn now to take a closer look at the rip current risk this weekend. lonnie. >> you just heard vanessa say that the national weather service has issued a moderate risk for rip currents along all of our beaches. you also heard her say you need the waves to create the rich current. if it's a day where the waves are small it's not a big risk. the bigger the waves, the more it pushes that watered onshore and it rushes out in the channel. let me show you how i see things. the rip current risk is out there for a reason due to the storm that's going to miss us. we are not going to get any rain. it's part enough away that we stay -- it's far enough away that we stay dry but the seas churn up. the water pushed onshore, think about it, it has nowhere to go, it goes back out in a single channel and it's that single channel that's the rip current but overall, outside looking weekend. vortex satellite and radar clouds offshore. there's really associated with the storm itself. it's that storm that's going to churn the seas up but again it's not in our area. we'll fe

a flash flood watch is just hours away from going into effect, and lonnie quinn is keeping an eye on the the storm for us. lonnie? >> reporter: kristine, it will go into effect 5 hours from now, 4:00 in the morning until 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, and that's when the flash flood watch is in effect for all five boroughs of the city, nassau county as well, the shoreline areas of westchester and fairfield county, and the north eastern coast of new jersey. here's what we can see. the front is getting close. the front is going to be combined with the moisture from the ocean, and we think you will be seeing more rain than you can see in the skinny line here. how much rain are we looking at? it's fair to say widespread 1-2 inches, and some spots could have more than 2 inches this is a big spot to see the numbers popping up. this is poughkeepsie, and we are headed down around trenton. it's wobbling out there, but a 1-2-inch spread is a good bet for the storm. >> all right, lonnie, thank you. >>> to the latest on the legionnaires' disease. 12 people in the city have now died, up 2 from yesterda

lonnie quinn has been monitoring new jersey rain storms. >> looks better for just about everybody out there. but boy, our four-hour time period came down in buckets for a select few. westchester reporting the temperatures around the area -- westchester reporting temperatures around the area, upper 70s, 80s for some folks. we didn't find 90 degrees not in new york city today. so kristine was right. the heat wave ended yesterday with that 90. what i see right now in new york city is the sky that's mostly cloudy. temperatures come in 80 degrees as of right now. headlines look like this. we have definitely had some storms popping up. they have been isolated only for a few of you out there. some you have haven't seen anything. if you are on the eastern side of the hudson, nothing. the western side of the hudson that's where the activity has been and one of those cells just didn't budge. it just sat and salt and rained and poured for hours. take a look at your rainfall estimates from doppler and our vortex system here. you're going to notice that light green color anywhere from half inch to

lonnie quinn talking about that in the weather center. >>> good afternoon. this is what it looks like now. it's a great looking shot. nobody complaining out there. might have been a few complaints this morning because we had some showers and storms for a select few but now mostly sunny. 86 degrees and we hit the 90- degree mark this afternoon. it makes this summer twelve 90- degree days or hotter. do i see more heat moving in? i think temperatures are going down. here's your vortex satellite and radar. big storms around springfield, massachusetts never really developed in our area during the afternoon hours. we had them this morning north and west -- very early- morning. and now we are looking at the front making it passageway through the area. this is the front right here. it's not all that obvious to the eye so i'll draw it in for you. this ragged little path of cloud cover and bigger rain up around the connecticut- massachusetts border that's your front. that's going to move through. the big change takes place with the cooler actually the less muggy air t

. >> lonnie quinn in the weather center tracking that for us. >> i think tonight if you are heading out on the town it's going to be cloudy. the clouds are out there right now. the 77 degrees the further east you go. a bright sky. look at the east end of long island. twin forks look good. the further west you find thicker clouds, even light rain out there in some of the western communities. the bigger picture shows you what's going on. a low pressure and a front moving in our direction. so dynamically what happens is ahead of that front you always get that surge of southwest air coming ahead of it. tomorrow the humidity is going way up. way up. and then you bring in the instability of the front itself. that is just a bad dynamic together. there is going to be rain, big rain coming out of this. i will give you some of my estimates on amounts. we will time it out for you. this is 6:30 tonight. not here yet. 4:00 in the morning. 4:00 in the morning is when the flash flood watch goes into effect by the national winter weather advisory, but it's not here yet. i think it will be after that. t

the next most important question, lonnie quinn has the answer. >> we have been watching the storm off to the west. it's looking better. right now some clouds. i'm going to call it partly sunny. it's 82 degrees as of right now. you take a look at the vortex satellite and radar, no rain in the area, just a few clouds spilling in. it looks as if they are all ahead of this wet weather. the storm is still looking impressive around the tennessee valley. here's your front through the tennessee valley. ahead of that front you will catch that southwest push but that southwest push is not going to be strong enough to overcome the high pressure that's dropping in that's going to keep all of this suppressed to our south. do we see anything in our area? i think we could see a little bit in some of our southern communities. watch how it works out. places like ocean county. 2:30 a.m. maybe a little bit gets north around the city. but keep in mind this is while you're sleeping. 2:30 a.m. then whacks during the day on friday? you will continue to see some spillover of some cloud cover here or there. t
