i came to nashville. the you ever hear of a company -- they were based in nashville, tennessee, and they owned the department store. and i was a young guy and i came from brooklyn and clean -- and queens and i went into manhattan and i did the hotel and some other things that were good. the thing i wanted more than anything was 5th avenue between 57th and 56th street, the tiffany location right next to tiffany. that is what i wanted. i wanted that piece of properly deaf property so badly. you are not supposed to want things that badly because god will get angry at me, right? but i wanted it so badly. it was based in tennessee. i came in and i came to nashville. i met with the heads of genesco, who were very great people, actually. they were having a lot of difficulties. a lot of fighting and everything. i convinced them to sell me the land. and the building. i bought fifth avenue from 57 to 56th streets, surrounding, i bought the rights from tiffany, i bought -- built the trump tower, and it is one of the

jim, you know the nashville area quite well. and i just want to sort of get your thoughts from what you've heard so far. it almost seems as though this gunman was inside the theater with a gun but we do not know if that gun was discharged on victims. we don't know if there's injuries or severity and the s.w.a.t. team did go into that theater. what do you make of the situation from what you have heard? >> sounds from what don aaron said, the public information officer for the nashville police, with that south patrol officers and the precinct is not far away and heavily patrolled area, that theater area, right off i-24 in south nashville. always a lot of patrol cars there and south precinct officer got in quick and encountered the gunman and looked like they might have exchanged some rounds and then the patrol officer backed away and metropolitan s.w.a.t. came in and killed him. they have a very, very good professional s.w.a.t. team there and the patrol is quick on it. we haven't heard a count on victims. hopefully they put an end

can you describe this -- describe this part of nashville for me. >> this part of nashville, we have a -- i mean it's busy. it's probably an average part of town. there's a community college from the store from us the nashville community college and there's libraries and campuses around so i mean it's -- it's an active area and we see a lot of police patrolling here a lot of ambulances because we're right next to the interstate and so it's just a really busy part of the area. >> and, again, for people just joining us describe for me you're still inside this store that's just adjacent to this movie theater and looking at two ambulances. one individual appears to be wounded from a hatchet. tell me what you're seeing right now. >> we can see probably one ambulance pulling away currently and there's two or three parks. there's a fire truck and we see multiple police cars. right now we're inside. a large number of police officers a few civilians out there but they are trying to back away and in the back of our store we see, again, mr. s.w.a.t. and more police vehicles in the back off of mt.

brian haus, public information officer for the nashville fire department. we responded to the call of an active shooter. fortunately after at least two or three searches at this point, we've only been required to treat three patients. the first patient was a 58-year-old male. all three patients had been sprayed with some sort of irritant which we believe was a pepper spray sprayed by the assailant. the 58-year-old male suffered from what was described as a superficial wouldn't to his shoulder or arm, from what may be a hatchet. then there were two women as well, a 53-year-old woman and 17-year-old women who were also treated as exposure to pepper spray. they've been treated and released. i assume they'll be talking to the police about what they saw. we are very grateful we only have three pepper spray exposure cases to treat at this point. this could have been a lot worse, and we're extraordinarily pleased that the police response was so effective and quick on this. at this point we are going to stay on scene as long as it takes until the police deem it saf

this time outside of nashville. police were able to stop the suspect before anyone was seriously injured. jay gray has the story in antioch, tennessee. >> as the chaos started to unfold, two police officers were working a traffic accident outside the movie theater. >> one of the officers encountered the the suspect. he saw a gun come up saw the trigger about to be pulled. he disengaged. >> it happened during showing of the film "mad max." the 20-year-old smt used pepper spray on three people in the theetzer and attacked this man with a hat chet. >> i'm internal mri grateful. excuse me. for metro police department. >> he apparently tried to escape through a back door where he was shot and killed by members of the nashville swat team. the gun he was holding was a soft pistol. he had criminal history including assault and existing arrest. police say he had a history of mental problems. >> they are reporting he had been committed four times, twice in 2004 and twice in 2007. >> part of a puzzle investigators are trying t

adam reece is right outside of nashville where this all happened. what more do we know about the attacker and his possible motive? >> reporter: we know that he had a history of mental health issues. he had some run-ins with the law. still no motive as to why this attack occurred. he entered the theater, bought a ticket. he was armed with an axe, an air gun, and pupper spray. he entered the theater and sprayed the pepper spray, hitting a man, his wife, and young daughter. another man ran out for help. there happened to be some police officers dealing with a traffic accident. officer jonathan firth raced into the theater. he was able to confront montano in the theater. he backed out of the theater and they kill him in a hail of gunfire. one of the victims of the pepper spray came out and spoke afterwards. >> i'm eternally grateful, excuse me, for their fast response. we were not looking for any of this. we did nothing to bring this upon ourselves and i'm very, very grateful that no one else got injured here today other than the person who perpetrated

david begnaud reports. >> reporter: nashville metro police say vicente montano entered the theater. he pulled out a gun and we ran out. >> reporter: he started clouding the room with pepper spray before swinging with the hatchet. >> they helped us when we were pepper sprayed giving me more faith in humanity again. >> he was met boy a s.w.a.t. team. >> there was a noise made by that gun. the officers then fired. >> reporter: a witness captured the loud gunshots heard during the s.w.a.t. team's takedown. the 29-year-old attacker died at the scene. just two days before the attack, his mother denise preuitt filed a missing persons report with murphysboro police. the report says montano was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in april 2006. preuitt told police she hadn't seen her son since 2013. the national association of theater owners said in a statement, quote, people have the right to go about their lives in peace and say. the safety of our guests and employees is and always will be our industry's highest priority. david begnaud, cbs news nashville. >> montano was committed twice

this time we're talking about nashville, tennessee. the gunman who was shot dead by police has been identified as that man, 29-year-old vicente montano. police say he was wearing a surgical mask when he pepper-sprayed two women and cut a man with a hatchet. but the gun he was carrying, you see it there, turned out to be an airsoft pistol that shoots plastic pellets. >> you look at the gun, if someone confronted you with it, you would think it was a real pistol. and obviously, an airsoft gun makes noise. when that initial officer who confronted him reported that the gun was aimed at him, the trigger was pulled, that officer heard noises. >> montano has a history of mental illness. police say he had been committed four times for psychiatric treatment. officers blew up one of the two backpacks he was carrying. it contained a fake bomb. >>> this attack follows two other deadly theater shootings. as millions of americans head to the movies this summer, it's raising new concerns about safety in those venues. abc's cecilia vega reports. >> re
