let's start with breaking news from north korea. kim jong-un has ordered his military to be on the ready for the demilitarized zone. we have kathy novak with the latest on the situation. >> reporter: christine, south korea is preparing itself for further provocation. north korea state news agency says kim jong-un as ordered military to prepare for surprise attacks and it also set a deadline of tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 p.m. for south korea to stop the campaign of psychological warfare. south korea has been using speakers along the border that separates the countries to broadcast propaganda messages. those are anti-north korea messages. this has been making pyongyang extremely angry. over the weekend, it threatened to blow up the speakers and launch strikes and this led to the outbreak of fire that we saw yesterday across the border, christine. the u.s. says it believes north korea was targeting those very speakers. south korea is refusing to stop the broadcasts. it is preparing for further provocation tomorrow when that deadline hi

south korea is not backing down, responded sternly to the provocation of north korea. yesterday, there was a dramatic escalation there. jim, at this point, how concerned are they? >> reporter: extremely concerned. this is not your typical back and forth and posturing between the north and south. two differences here. one, north korea, more under kim jong-un, we've seen in a whole host of ways. but the south has been tougher under their new leader, the new president there, and there's concern from officials that either side will not back down. south koreans evacuating their homes today near the border, with north korea threatening all-out war. kim jong-un ordered his troops to move to a war footing at this emergency meeting friday, just one day before north korea's deadline for the south to shut off these giant loud speakers, broadcasting messages critical of the regime. but south korea's president is defying the threat, giving her military full authority to retaliate against north korean attacks, ordering them to take military action first and report back later. fear n

this is a key issue for north korea. what specifically are people hearing on the other side of the border and from your own insight why does this anger north korea? >> these are broadcasts that happen at random usually at various times of the day without any advanced warning. they go on for several hours and it's as simple as news reports, music, messages about how life is better on the south korean side than the north korean side. all these messages sent into the north, a a country that tries very hard to keep its people and to keep outside information from getting in. it's infuriating. there are reports about kim jong-un that would never be heard within north korea and these are targets to the northern korean soldiers stationed along the dmz. three quarters are stationed near the dmd and the broadcasts are an attempt to hurt their morale, if you will, or encourage them to defect to the other side. north korea has their own speakers set up and they have propaganda praising their country and the leadership, praising the

north korea fired a rocket into south korea. they have nuclear weapons now in north korea, and this is another very concerning reality. and so we're waiting to see what the north koreans do next in this standoff. >> and the kim jong-un, the leader of north korea, the young leader, is very unpredictable. his father was at least a little bit more predictable in these kinds of situations. when you say north korea has dug tunnels under the dmz that go into south korea and they would move troops that way, is that what you're saying? >> right, they can move troops through those tunnels. i also had the opportunity some years ago with the south korean delegation to go into there, and when you look at the way on the north korean side, from all of the artillery pieces and the tanks and the missiles, the katyusha rockets, they have that so militarized up there, that they can unleash quite a sea, as they call it, a sea of fire onto the south. you pointed out that the south korean capital of seoul is close to the border. so our hope is that
