sam: and good evening, and welcome to "reality check." i'm sam brock. for the next 30 minutes, we'll take a closer look at topics making headlines, and claims coming from high-profile leaders, to separate the truth from the bunk. we begin with an issue that's been a real drain on our state's resources, water or lack thereof. you see, california farmers had had to cut back, and the impact is huge. more than half of the country's fruits vegetables, and nuts are grown right here. with fierce competition over a finite resource fingers are being pointed. enter the one crop that's taken the brunt of the blame the california almond. sam: for california farmers, you can say that life has been well, kind of nuts these days. plants in fields are thirsty without much water to go around. so it makes sense for critics to start searching for a scapegoat. but is america's number-one snack nut shown here in video provided by the almond board of california really as bad as it's cracked up to be? let's look at a recent report from the bay area-based pacific institute tha

sam, what are they saying about all this? sam: people are angry and frustrated. if you can imagine that you are sitting in front of a house, as the little girls were yesterday, three of them as it turns out, sitting in front of a house and along down the street comes a guy running. people shooting at him. the guy runs in front of where the girls are and into the house in front of where they are sitting. out the back door. meantime he is shot and one of the little girls. no one was killed in the incident but it has people in the community quite frustrated by what has happened. they only live a block from a police station. they are concerned about that. tonight the police have put in a portable surveillance outfitted so they can see what is going on here. there was nothing like that here last night. but again, a lot of frustration here in southwest washington. they wonder what is going on, why the police were not here. they are concerned, they are asking whether the police care about them in this neighborhood that in fact is their neighbor. the little girl is in th

sam: the power of public opinion. the city was this close to not appealing the court decision that said it overstepped its bounds in declaring grand central a landmark. now we debate whether the mayor can ban 32 ounce soft drinks. then it was a question of can the city exercise its police power? the declaring it a landmark and borrowing the penn central railroad from building a skyscraper constitute a taking under the law? she read the story ends called the municipal art society, and with the municipal art society, with philip johnson, with fred koch, with a number of other people, rallied public opinion and galvanized the movement to save grand central. did that influence the court decisions? one never knows. judges are somewhat swayed by public opinion but it created momentum to keep the appeal going, which it did until it was 1978 when the supreme court ruled and said this landmark law is valid and set the stage for landmark preservation all over the country. >> did anything ever happen to the benches in the waitin

sam, great to have you with us. sam: good morning. i am pleased to be with you. jonathan: we talk about profit dropping, would it be unfair to the manager of the company? when i look at your numbers, how do i read them? how do you read them? what does this say about your business? sam: it is a critical result in what is a challenging market. in terms of improving our cost base, and working capital, all of these come together to deliver a critical result which has enabled us to continue to get a 12% increase in dividend in u.s. dollars and we will continue with that $2 billion buyback. this is good news for shareholders, which is an important focus for me. jonathan: when you look at the market, you describe it as the normal -- new normal. what is that? sam: the industry has traditionally been cyclical. people expect that one day the market will return to where was a couple of years ago. we are expecting me new normal will probably be somewhere in the middle between where we are now and where we have been. that implies -- applies not just to commodities, it applies

sam, what happened to the baby is just devastating. sam: little babies cry a lot. according to the court situation it wasn't where the guy just went off because he was afraid or got upset about the baby crying. this was methodical. the 28-year-old robert smith senior methodically would squeeze 5-week-old robert smith jr. to the point the last time he killed the baby. little robert smith junior lived in a house on ninth street northwest and according to the court paper when he cried too much for his father, robert smith senior would squeeze him until he stopped. the child would cry a lot and become fussy, he said he squeezed the child to stop him from crying and has done it over the course of the child's life. august 4 when the child died police said at the scene in the night. at first, said the child was injured when he did c.p.r.

sam houston knew andrew jackson from his time back east. he had served under andrew jackson in the military. he was involved in politics in tennessee. and so, he and andrew jackson's knew each other from before houston' time in texas. circumstances pushed houston to texas. he became involved in the efforts here to gain independence, and the push for annexation and joining the united states. that issue had gone back and forth between prior president of texas and u.s. presidents. both sides at one point or another refusing. there were issues going on, annexing a state that accepted slavery was an issue. great britain getting involved. sparing the united states to an -- spurring the united states to annex texas. in 1884 it became a major issue any gets revisited. so, andrew jackson writes to his friend sam houston basically saying that it would really benefit the future prosperity of texas and the united states for this to happen. he ends the letter saying, "god bless you. is the prayer of your friend, andrew jackson." the 1900 storm for galve

it is different every time, sam. sam: this one is more economy-related. i am not surprised -- i'm a little surprised we did not have p recently.u very soft economic conditions of ground in china i think what we need is a revision to the economic growth target. then we need some monetary easing, some stimulus programs to put some confidence back into the market. that is where we are at the moment. it is really a very large selloff. it is sliding across the rest of asia. taiwan today is down over 6%. a very significant selloff. angie: the message is a little scary for retail investors in china. eventually, it was the pboc or china will always step in. below the 3500 mark, they always stepped in, whether it was stimulus or cuts. now, silent. m: you can look at the stock market in terms of regulatory approvals. it needs to be the economy. what we need is significant liquidity to come in via the pboc and then lent into the real economy. we need interest rate cut rrr cuts -- interest rate cuts, rrr cuts. also, the corporate market is still very high. we need to
