investigators went to shannon's home. he wasn't there, but his mother was, and she was very helpful. >> she reported to us that she had found some bullets and a black bag, a black bag that she recalled had at one time also contained ski masks and drugs. >> police found the bag in shannon's bedroom. the drugs and ski masks were gone, but they did find 13 unfired .38-caliber bullets. investigators wondered whether these bullets matched the ones that killed ron shaw. firearms expert chris henderson examined the knurls on the fatal bullets. knurls are the ridge-like protrusions that hold the lubrication needed to fire them. henderson then compared those knurls with the knurls on the bullets in shannon touchet's bag. >> we had the same number of knurls, same width, and those knurls looked kind of like railroad tracks going around the outer surface of that bullet. all the physical characteristics, everything that we could physically see and measure were indistinguishable from one another. we could not tell the difference betwee

what do you have there, shannon? >> reporter: yeah, we've got some big problems here on route 78 and we can zoom into this tractor-trailer that was on fire just a little while ago. in fact we can show you with sky rider 7 in the back end here over here, you've got damage to the wheels as well and because of that, it's going to be a while before they are going to be able to get this guy out of here. don't know what he was carrying but all of this happened on the eastbound side of route 78 around exit 40, you can see they still have that right lane blocked off but when they go to get the wrecker out of here you can bet that all lanes are going to be shut down once again and with lanes closed previously, this is what it has done to traffic. it is a bumper-to-bumper nightmare and this is really not moving from miles -- for miles and miles. the delay takes you back to exit 36 in basking ridge. if you can take it down to route 22 or route 28 it will get you around this much better than sitting in this mess. reporting live

we've learned that the person of interest, shannon j. miles, he had a red ford truck, a ford ranger that we've shown surveillance pictures of that authorities released a short time after the shooting. evidently authorities found that truck outside of miles' home. they went to the home. they arrested him. they've been questioning him throughout the course of the night and the course of today. we weren't sure if he was a suspect since they did back off on that. a little earlier they held a press conference and came out and were pretty strong in their wording, saying that they really needed the public's help, that this suspect was still out there. now it looks like he was at least being questioned by detectives throughout the course of the day. now faces this murder charge for gunning down the deputy, a father of two who was simply filling up his car with gas when, according to authorities, miles came up behind him, shot him in the head, in the back. the deputy fell to the ground. he fell to the ground and according to authorities, that's w

shannon. >> it has been f 1/2 hours since -- 6 1/2 hours since this accident happened. you can see how many members of the crime scene investigation are still on the scene there. the good news is it looks like they are starting to clear it up. the bad news is that southbound side of the throughway remains shut down, which means delays on route 287 back to skyline drive. route 17, the other direction on the throughway where all lanes are open. look at this volume. this is a bumper to bumper delay that goes all the way back. wait for it. all the way back to the tappan zee bridge. that is a nightmare. this is what we were worried about happening. you get into accidentings like this, you start to see accidents happen. a tractor-trailer in an accident here. that doesn't help things. this has been out here so long, it's starting to affect your side streets as well. 59 is a viable alternate for the beginning part of the trip. once you get close to the accident, you have a single lane of traffic that's bumper to bumper just like the throughway itself. unfortunately not a great

they say these two gentlemen, shannon j. miles and darren goforth didn't have any prior interaction, they didn't know each other, that's what's led them to call this an unprovoked execution-style killing. we heard in the first appearance, probable cause hearing for miles, some of the ruthless details of this shooting. you heard devon anderson the district attorney in harris county talk about the 15 shell casings found at the scene. this handgun recovered from the suspect's garage holds 14 bullets in the clip and one in the chamber, 15 shell casings found there surrounding the body of guerin of darren goforth. meaning this suspect loaded the entire rounds of the gun into the back of this officer. he was for all intents and purposes blindsided. this killing, captured on surveillance video, also a witness saw what happened and phoned into police. we're learning more about how they were able to track down that ford pickup truck he was driving. according to investigators there was distinctive markings on that car including a whit

they have changed or charged this man, 38-year-old shannon j. miles. harris county sheriff says that miles has a previous record, including charges of resisting arrest, trespassing, the list goes on and on. investigators say last night he shot and killed deputy darren goforth as he filled his patrol car with gasoline at a service station just outside houston. here is what the sheriff had to say at the news conference. >> with encouragement, cooperation and prayers behind us, we have identified the suspect responsible for the senseless and cowardly act. we continue to evaluate the mountain of evidence collected by investigators investigators e actively interviewing witnesses that may have additional knowledge of the incident. i'm proud of the men and women that worked swiftly to apprehend the responsible person who posed a significant threat to both the law enforcement and community at large. our deputies returned to the streets tonight to hold a delicate peace that was shattered last evening. >> investigators are still looking for a motive in this case
