in south philadelphia. two women were carjacked by this guy who was running from police. the women are safe but the suspect is still on the run. nbc 10's katy zachry rejoins us now with more on that key piece of evidence that this crook left behind. katy? >> reporter: chris, that's right. south detectives behind me say they believe they know who they're looking for because they have in their possession this guy's former prison i.d. heç actually left it at one of the scenes earlier this morning. here's how it all played out. police stopped this black sedan for driving erratically. as they were walking up to the vehicle, the driver sped off. police jumped back in their car and followed him. a few blocks away at 9th and rittner streets, the guy crashed and carjacked this nearby gray sedan. he forced two men in the front seat out. two women still in the car as the suspect drove away with it. so he eventually pulled over a few blocks away, he took off running, leaving the women unharmed in that vehicle. police

she's live in south philadelphia. katy, what happened? >> reporter: tracy, there were a lot of twists and turns to what happened this morning in south philadelphia. fortunately, police were there to witness most of it. and they believe they know who they're looking for. they say the man who was driving this black mustang is a former prison inmate. they say this because they found what's believed to be his prison i.d. in the car that he stole. now, initially police pulled over that car because he was driving erratically. when officers walked up to it, he took off. they followed in their patrol car, only to see the guy crash the mustang several blocks away. he then carjacked a nearby vehicle who had people in it. the officers couldn't stop it because they were too far away. they saw him force the braver and a passenger out of the car and then he drove off. however, two women were in the back seat of that car. the suspect eventually pulled over and ran away. police are still looking for him. >> now there will be additional charges of kidnapp

from south philadelphia high school. jacobs was on the job only a few weeks when he was shot and killed on snyder avenue near broad street. >> i heard he got killed. it really tore me apart. >> reporter: retired police officer joe haggerty worked with george jacobs and remembers july 15, 1966 vividly. all these years later he's never met his friends' killer. >> i wouldn't wants to. i think i would have killed him myself. >> reporter: haggerty told "eyewitness news" the pain rushed back this week when he found out that someone spray painted jacobs plaque. >> i called him a very nice name. the relationship between haggerty and jacobs started in the early 19 40's in south philadelphia when george jacobs showed little joe how to play baseball. >> i loved the man ever since then. haggerty says the two continued to develop a friendship but a conversation one night at work still haunts him. >> i regret one thing. i said george the only thing this job will ever get is you killed. and i regret that ever since. >> reporter: i spok
