a typhoon is impacting and residents in tokyo will also feel its effects. robert speta has details. >> we're looking at record-breaking rainfall and looking at the damaging winds continuing to track overhead but one of the things i do want to mention is that moisture coming along the eastern of the storm is definitely impacting areas farther off towards the east. the peninsula, also over towards 300 hill meters and another big thing is you have that moisture coming up but also you have back here towards the east will have an indirect impact. cooler air from the north, that storm is going to be making for unsettled conditions so over the next basically 72 hours, we'll see the threat of rain showers and thunderstorms around the plain including the tokyo area. even though the storm is farther towards the west, you still may want to have an umbrella ready because of the moisture inflow coming in from the south with this one. now back towards the west, i want to mention much of the korean peninsula and china will stay rather unsettled out there. extending down t

tokyo markets opened this thursday morning. after the 3% rally yesterday, the nikkei is opening up 2%, 18,741. and the broader topix is up 2.3% right now. to recap, the nikkei plummeted more than 2,000 points friday through tuesday. so considering the 500 points of gains yesterday, markets are resuming their bull run again. quickly on indices in the asia pacific, kospi is up about half a percent. australia is up about .7 of a percent. all eyes on chinese markets which open in about an hour. ramin, it was a historic day in new york. wall street posted its biggest one-day gain in almost four years. gains accelerated in the last minutes of trading, quite a different picture of what we saw yesterday. short-term traders led, the dow closed up nearly 4%. the tech heavy nasdaq jumped 4.25%. of course comments from the fed official william dudley about the september rate hike looking less compelling encouraged market players to return to risky assets from safe havens. ramin? >> those comments seem to have moved markets. speaking of saf

so it's definitely prompting many market playersn tokyo. let's look at the closing levels for august 12th. the nikkei closing at a two-week low, 20,392. the broader topix closed down 1.25%. it's obvious the yuan's devaluation is spanning risk-off moves. that's raising demand for the dollar as with many japanese dealers on holiday. the dollar jumped to a two-month high during tokyo trading hours. many reports from japanese official institutions saying that the yuan's devaluation will have a limited effect on the japanese economy, but some people are definitely worried that the cheaper yuan could trigger a decline in the number of chinese tourists visiting japan. made in japan beauty products were very popular among chinese tourists, so cosmetics makers kose and shiseido both saw declines. automakers honda and toyota were also among the losers. honda fell over 2% as the automaker depends heavily on sales in china. as for winners, textile makers unitika and pioneer were bucking the trend. that's a wrap for today. back to you. >>> the devaluati

notice here, we're located in tokyo right here. down further towards the south, you see these bands of red lines rolli rolling through. the southwestern portions we see this line of storms rolling through, just enough rotation peeshlly to spark off a tornado. as you continue on throughout the day tuesday, a low pressure system is still moving along the sea of japan side and so we have warm air coming if from the south, cold air coming if from the north and higher up in the atmosphere, that instability is going to lead us to the potential for heavy rainfall and some storms as we go through tuesday for the areas. they're all going to see the possibly of rainfall to 150 millimeters as we go through tuesday evening. now that may be one story when it comes to weather if asia. we also have a couple typhoons. these storms got stronger through the weekend. one of these storms is a very strong typhoon and moving toward the west at the moment. looking and setting its sights towards the philipines after already causing problems, which it did

i'm raja pradhan in tokyo. >>> the u.n. nuclear watchdog wants iran to confirm whether it has built an extension to a military facility outside tehran. the country is suspected of having conducted tests at the site to develop nuclear weapons. officials with the international atomic energy agency distributed a report on iran's nuclear development to member states. it was the first update since iran and six world powers reached a final agreement last month to limit tehran's nuclear program in return for lifting economic sanctions. the u.n. agency says iran is broadly complying with the agreement. for example, it's providing information on allegations of past work on nuclear weapons by the agreed deadline. but the iaea officials says satellite imagery has revealed that an extension has been made to the parchin military site. they say such activity could undermine its ability to verify whether tests have been conducted there. western countries had urged iran to allow iaea inspectors to enter the facility, but the final agreemen

now to the tokyo stock exchange. >> thank you very much. definitely after the plunge we saw global indexes, especially china's indexes, investor here taking very few chances. we saw selling across the board. let's have a look at exact closing levels for nikkei and tom isaac. nikkei closing 19,435 down, tom isaac 1,573 down just over 3%. nikkei hitting its lowest intraday level today since july 9th at china's economic slowdown weighing heavily consentment. one analyst said china may be bearing down on federal reserve in u.s. over raising rates at the same time also keeping a close eye on plunging stocks globally because of concerns over china's slowing growth. with the stocks falling we also saw the dollar retreating as well to its lowest level against the yen since mid july. that, of course, weighed heavily on a lot of key exporters coming up there. nintendo, toyota, chipmaker tokyo electron among some big names. interestingly shares in the energy sector which had been pummeled pretty much this week saw a little bit of a rebound. looking at

i'm catherine kobiyashi in tokyo. police in thailand are learning more details about the man they believe is behind monday's deadly explosion in bangkok. they now say he went to the bombing site by a taxi. the explosion at a popular shrine left 20 people dead and 125 wounded. police say security camera footage shows the man leaving a backpack containing the bomb at the site. they say the suspect boarded the three-xwheeled taxi on monday near police headquarters 4 kilometers west of the explosion site. they say the man showed the driver the screen of his mobile phone to indicate his destination. he didn't talk with the driver but spoke on the cell phone in a foreign language. authorities questioned two other men an appearing to provided him with cover placing the backpack at the shrine. they confirm one was an hourist and the other the guide. they say neither is linked to the attack. >>> an event is postponed. it's one of the largest of its kind in the capitalment it attracted about 300,000 people last year. this year'

i'm james tengan in tokyo. ban ki-moon will visit china next week and attend a military parade marking the 70th anniversary of what it calls its victory over japan. the n. officially announced ban's trip is scheduled for september 2nd through 6th. it includes watching the parade in beijing on the 3rd. ban is visiting at the invitation of president xi jinping. he plans to meet to discuss next month's u.n. summit and issues related to global warming. the chinese government says invitations to attend the parade have been accepted by the presidents of rshia and south korea and 28 other state leaders. not attending are u.s. president barack obam ajapan's prime minister shinzo abe and the leaders of major european nations. in may, ban attended a ceremony in russia marking the 70th anniversary of the soviet union's victory over nazi germany. >>> kim jong-un has called this week's accord a landmark occasion that could pave the way for defusing tension. the state-run korean news agency reported that kim made the remarks

i'm james tengan in tokyo. police in thailand say a large number of ball bearings were found at the scene of a deadly blast in bangkok. they say this indicates it was an act of terrorism carried out by a group with expertise in explosives. 20 people were killed and 125 injured in money's bombing at a popular shrine in central bangkok. police are hunting for a man who left a backpack at the scene minutes before the blast. they say he could be from another country. authorities have released new security camera images. they show the man riding a motorcycle taxi towards the blast site. the images were changen 20 minutes before the explosion. a doctor who examined victims of the blast says he found many six millimeter ball bearings in their bodies. police believe the objects were packed into the bomb to inflict more damage. security footage shows two other men who appear to provide cover for the suspect as he left the backpack. police say the bombing was a systematic and premeditated terrorist attack carried out by

but also put chich jeema and tokyo on this forecast. because we'll have two large and powerful typhoons impacting japan at the same time. over here towards the east, well south of tokyo, you're going to be seeing some violent intensity typhoon winds, upwards of 250 kilometers per hour. this storm passing just east of these islands. but by sunday, you'll be seeing high winds across this area. good news, definitely used to these storm systems there. north of that, we have this front here in much of mainland japan, and that's the big buffer and the main reason why this storm system is staying down here towards the south. and this one is curving off to the north. it is unfortunately still bringing heavy rainfall. so you are looking at risk of some showers. upwards of 100 millimeters in the korean peninsula. danny, off to the west, expect to be our first named hurricane of 2015 in the atlantic. staying with this, significant drought in place across this area, 20% of the normal rainfall. millions of people getting water trucked in. so you nee

i'm james tengan in tokyo. welcome to "newsline." chinese authorities are trying to determine the cause of the deadly explosions last week in a warehouse in tianjin. local media say a hazardous chemical used in explosives may have ignited the blasts. experts have been checking water, soil, and rubble to see what chemicals were involved. the state-run xinhua news agency quotes a warehouse source as saying a fire started and may have caught on to a chemical called amoan yum nitrate. more than 200 tons of the substance were stored near where the fire broke out. but the report says the investigations are ongoing. it describes the situation at the blast site as complex. more than 40 kinds of hazardous chemicals were reportedly stored in the area. officials say 13 of the dead are still unidentified. 65 people remain missing. residents around the area are concerned about the hazards of pollution from the blasts. chinese state-run broadcaster cctv quoted fire officials as citing nerve gas and cyanide were detected tuesday from air samples. >
