, otherwise known as jim webb. jim webb has been involved in politics in government in some form or another since the 1980s, since he was ronald reagan's navy secretary. he came to that job as a decorated vietnam war veteran. jim webb had a hard war in vietnam as a u.s. marine. when he came home and he wrote about it, his vietnam books were really, really good and really well received. his novel "fields of fire" i will tell you is a masterpiece. really, if you have not read it, you should read it, it is worth it. it is an amazing book. jim webb came home from vietnam. he became a prolific and very accomplished career as a novelist. but in 1987, jim webb was tapped by ronald reagan to become secretary of the navy. and for jim webb, that lasted all of about a year. >> good evening. who would have believed it. president reagan's defense secretary being criticized by one of his own for not spending enough on defense. navy secretary james webb, a decorated vietnam war veteran, best-selling author and one of the brightes

jim webb noort problem. the only issue is pro-choice issues, but i think he will come around on that as well. i can honestly say, how in the world someone could support the other extremes in the democratic party, clinton and sanders and webb is a uniter and he would make not just a phenomenal commander-in-chief, but president. looking at bernie sanders on the democratic side, does it make it tough for jim webb with his views to get to the nomination, or even to the cochrane was -- the caucus in iowa? becausei think it does, of money issues. and he spoke to those in regard to the campaign, and the insanity of how much money plays in electability in this era. but i think if he gets his voice out there in c-span and other forms, if the debates come up and they do not dodge him, then he will outshine them come outsmart them, and out of them. because he is not fake. he doesn't have to run with many thing. he is a democrat from virginia right up north of us here. -- asosed president bush i understand it, president

judith martin, chuck hagel, ross perot, lisbeth taylor, john warner and webb. i'd. i'd like to read a few passages. okay, this starts off in april 1979 and i attended and i attended a meeting called for the purpose of generating publicity for vietnam veteran needs. suddenly the lone wolf who had not said a word stood up and throughout his idea. what about a memorial question? in view of the discussion, he came totally out of left field. what you mean someone said. i mean having a national memorial for vietnam veterans. vietnam veterans don't need a memorial, they need better benefits shot back feldman. a few others made similar remarks and some smirked while the man stood silently. no one spoke in support and i felt sorry for him. the idea felt out of place. after he set down a looking at him and thinking about his idea. while some veterans while some veterans truly needed more benefits, most didn't. all did need some recognition and acknowledgment of their service in the war. i had to face combat and hadn't been injured, but many had. i met some of the best people

brian webb reports on how she survived all that time. >> reporter: the hiker was airlifted to a hospital after surviving nine days alone in the sierra nevada mountains. >> she was injured. she does have some broken bones. >> reporter: 62-year-old miyuka harwood was rescued after she used a whistle to alert rescue teams. it's a huge relief to harwood's family. >> beyond excited. they couldn't stop screaming and crying and yelling amongst themselves and they were all in a car on their way up here. >> reporter: harwood, an experienced hiker, went missing from her group august 20th. the search had been hampered by thick smoke from a nearby wildfire. harwood crawled for two days to reach a creek bed. >> she was able to drink from the creek with the water that she had to stay alive. >> reporter: authorities say harwood was weak and exhausted but thankful to be alive. brian webb for cbs news. >> and tonight harwood's family says she is recovering from surgery to set several broken bones in her leg. >>> still ahead on wusa9 news this sunday night, another reason why you should never ever take a
