al jazeera has more from amman. after a jordanian officer reportedly opened fire inside a training center in amman. a south african was also killed before the gunman took his own life. he was killed after the attack by jordanian security forces, although we have heard other reports suggesting that he shot himself and committed suicide following the attack. now these instructors, the foreign instructors are contracted by the jordanian public security department to train jordanian policemen, as well as other arab police forces in the region. jordan is known to have a strong army and police force, and is also a safe country, so this training center is also used as a hub for countries to train with u.s. funds. these trainers, the foreign trainers, including the americans were in jordan to train from what we understand from officials around 116 palestinian policemen and as well 16 lebanese policemen. the state department saying they are looking into the reports and working with jordanian authorities. the pentagon telling

the incident happened earlier in the day at this police training facility outside of amman. it has expanded its operations to train police working for the palestinian authority as well as working in other arab countries. the idea is to basically give them the skills in order to be professional police officers, and not just running around using whatever judgment they deem police in order to police local communities. now, they don't know why it is that the man who is said to be behind the shootings of the five people, a top criminal investigator, he's reported to have been, they don't know why he decided to open his service pistol at the facility, at the end of a graduation ceremony on monday. that is being investigated. at least five other people were injured in the incident. their families have been notified. but this is something that is very unusual inside jordan, at least from the u.s. perspective. it is considered a very safe country. it's a place where they usually have been warned to watch out for pickpockets rather than watching out for these sort of attacks. of cours

carson joins me now from the jordanian capital of amman. dr. carson, let me just start with the basic question, what did you learn on this trip? >> well, you know, it was always wonderful to see things firsthand and to have an opportunity to actually go to the refugee camps and to some of the medical facilities. and i actually talked to the people, not only to the jordanians who are incredibly generous in terms of their support of refugees, and that's been the case for decades now, but also to the syrian refugees themselves to find out what they think about the whole situation, whether their wants and desires. the syrians want to be in syria. they want to be repatriated in their own country. and they are looking for a mechanism to get there. but in the meantime, the facilities that have been offered to them here in jordan are very satisfactory and when i asked them what americans could do they said "if americans could support those facilities to a greater degree because they have much more capacity here in jordan and i suspect in some of the ot

carson joins me nowrom the jordanian capital of amman. dr. carson, let me just start with the basic question, what did you learn on this trip? >> well, you know, it was always wonderful to see things firsthand and to have an opportunity to actually go to the refugee camps and to some of the medical facicities. and i actually talked to the people, not only to the jordanians who are incredibly generous in terms of their support of refugees, and that's been the case for decades now, but also to the syrian refugees themselves to find out what they think about the whole situation, whether their wants and desires. the syrians want to be in syria. they want to be repatriated in their own country. and they are looking for a mechanism to get there. but in the meantime, the facilities that have been offered to them here in jordan are very satisfactory and when i asked them what americans could do they said "if americans could support those facilities to a greater degree because they have much more capacity here in jordan and i suspect in some of the ot

amman has been covering that attack from brussels. he joins us now. what happened there, give us the facts what happened today in mali. >> reporter: we're still learning a little more about what happened in the early hours of the morning, chris. what we do know is that a group of armed gun men entered the hotel, launching grenades, with armed weapons and took the hotel hostage. according to the radisson hotel company, they took about 170 people hostage in the early hours of the morning. and as this day unfolded we saw the malian security forces backed by a few u.s. special forces that were in the area at the time by chance providing support as well as french special forces that arrived on the scene later, all of them entered the hotel throughout the course of the day and began to clear the hotel out floor by floor, room by room. by the end of the day we got a clear picture of what happened. according to the united nations at least 20 were killed that includes 19 hostages, three of the gun men, and one member of the malian police force, that stormed th
