he grew up in cuba cat. he grew up in cuba in the 1940s and 50s as a fan, that's the baseball cap he is wearing their with one of his uncles. it was one of the four teams in the cuban league, he would tell me stories about american players who would come to cuba every winter to play baseball. among some of the players who tell me about where people like tom lasorda who went on to become manager of the dodgers, future hall of famer's money urban, rate dandridge, players such as hank thompson and terry mcduffie. also before chuck connors was famous as the rifleman and he was a dodgers farmhand who played. so as i started my career as a sports writer is started to find some of these players retired in florida. i began interviewing them for newspaper articles with the idea that hopefully i would be able to write a book on the topic. once i learned that jackie robinson, that his historic major league debut basically began in cuba with spring training, at that point he and the cuban league became a mini obsession

i find cuba cuba every day music. i think you every day in the language i hear, fragments that i over here in west palm beach where i work. i find it in food. in fact, i conjured cuba in my kitchen constantly. i am now now the food editor for the palm beach post and i just love stories about food. i love stories about how recipes came to be, how they are passed along from one relative to another, from one generation to another. so this week i'm going to conjure cuba once again to make kitchen when i make my mother's black beans for thanksgiving, because as you know we have to have that alien dish always at thanksgiving. our alien dish is always the black beans. my mom passed away in 2006 and every year i still make that big batch of beans exactly how she used to do it, i don't know if it comes out the same but the secret is that little touch of sherry at the end. but i will tell you, it is a insoluble bridge. i traveled to cuba on a raft of from frito, constantly with with aromas, with memories, it just gets me. for m

why did he go to cuba? pretty much the closest city to new orleans in the nineteenth century. more to the point slavery was still legal in cuba and no signs it was corroding or being undermined by new orleans. mary dehart must have recognized an opportunity to hold on to the only property pgi deharts had, rose. that is why she went to the jail in the winter of 1862 or 1863 to convince rose to go to havana. as we have seen rose refused to sell mary dehart with the three children to new orleans without the consent of their mother or their father. there is a very poignant letter in the archives to the union commander of new orleans imploring him not to allow the children to be sent to havana. by the time mary dehart returned to new orleans in january of 1865 the world had really turned upside down, by that time slavery had been abolished in louisiana through a new state constitution ratified in 1864 so rose and two children she had pronounced 3, one child that had been with her in jail and a second child born after the deharts had left. the second child louise was born tragically
