steve barrett has been working to find out why those radios were silenced during dangerous storms. you spoke with the national weather service about this outage?>> reporter: i did. we're trying to get some answers about towers like the ones behind me. that is the tower that would broadcast to a weather alert radio like this. that went down and had problems in january during the storm. now for the second time, trouble. the radio broadcasts are especially important for people who don't know the severe weather is headed their way. the broadcasts come from the national weather service in melbourne and will alert you if there is, say, a tornado in the middle of the night. the system is a combination of radio broadcasts and cellular the signal to the tower. that cellular connection is what failed this time around. it also failed back in january. then we told you about the same problem at the tower in orlando. the national weather service said it had to work with their cellular carriers, at&t and verizon, to resolve the problem. clearly it's an issue with these towers reliability. i did c
