so this is a big night for bernie sanders. as jeff weaver, his campaign manager, just noted, we don't know the final numbers yet. likely one will win one or two delegates more than that. 90 precincts are still out. wolf, where are they? they're all spread around the state. but the bulk of them, we still only have 88% of the vote in the largest county in iowa. polk county. that's a big thing. secretary clinton has been winning by this margin about all night long. there's no guarantee when the others come in they'll be consistent. but she has that roughly seven-point margin throughout the night. so they would assume that, although there could be some sanders precincts we don't know. where else are they? over anywhere lynn county you see 95% of the vote, that means there's still a few precincts out. bernie sanders winning in the cedar rapids suburbs. out in dubuque county 97%. that's gone up in the last couple minutes. they're getting close to finishing up here. secretary clinton with a lead up there. senator sanders, though, run

sanders, has taken the lead. 50.2% over bernie sanders 49.3%. that's some interesting news, jeff. there's still votes to come in. have you been told by the sanders campaign whether if they declare victory, it's because they believe they have one. do they believe based on the actual numbers. >> they're going through all this. i heard this. senator sanders believes he won here. his message won over. whether he wins first place or a close second, he believes his message won over. they believe that's going to be a compelling message. regardless of the race -- of the actual winner here, we saw four years ago, mitt romney was the winner on the republican side, and a few weeks later, it was rick santorum. this outcome tonight ensures this race is going to go on for months and months on the democratic side. we'll have to see what senator sanders says when he comes here, he'll be focusing on the moral victory, the issues he's been campaigning for here, that he believes are so strong behind people. jake? >> and the moral victory is, of course, important,

yes, bernie sanders crushed hillary clinton with young voters and bernie sanders' problem is he's not turning them out. if you look at the difference between this primary and the last democratic primary in 2008, based on what i saw, the young voters were the smallest part of the electorate and dropped by four or five points in terms of their percentage of the electorate. he's not energizing. young people are not being energized to turn out. both sides have work to do. i will say this, new hampshire like anywhere else, it's complicated and unpredictable. i'm not going to come on tv and predict the most unpredictable electorate in the country. bernie sanders' strengths in a lot of these polls is based on independent voters. remember this, independent voters can go in and pull either parties' ballot. if they think the republican side is more interesting to them on that day, and they pull the republican ballot, that's a vote bernie sanders was hoping to get. so this is a big jigsaw puzzle they are both trying to figure out. >> mo, quickly, what are the risks for bernie sanders tonight? ho

bernie sanders wins new hampshire. obviously the south carolina democratic primary is coming in a week. this could be a big thing in terms of momentum for either of the candidates? >> absolutely. from the hillary clinton point of view, basically a tie in iowa. listen, of course, a next door neighbor. new hampshire, 22-point lead. a very red state. if she doesn't do well, what's the excuse? what i want to hear. what can you say? a lot of people of color. i'm glad we talked about labor. sometimes talk so much about race we forget. in nevada, labor is a very, very big deal. if you talk to people there, there's a split. the labor leadership really wants hillary clinton but the labor members many of them are swayed by bernie. in a caucus environment, it is very hard for a member to stand up and say, to my labor boss, hey, i don't care. i'm going to the other side of the room. how that plays out will are very interesting tonight. >> we actually call them leaders in our party. labor bosses. >> sort of a derogatory term, just

they can vote for bernie sanders. i have a friend who sent me an e-mail saying i will be for hillary in the end, but i will vote for bernie just to annoy her. i don't think these voters assume bernie sanders will be the nominee. but they want to send a message about it. what do you think of marco rubio? >> i think this could be a big night for marco rubio. they would save them enough time in iowa and ted cruz was off doing the tour in august. they had an opportunity to spend a lot of time in iowa. he didn't. voters i ran into were at rubio rallies were saying where has this guy been? we don't know him yet. and he seems to be making it. he is not popular. he's not a natural leader. but, this again is the establishment versus the outsider. like i said, there is going to be a land somewhere for an establishment candidate. if marco rubio is playing in iowa, it has been a cruz-trump story for the past months and when it wasn't, it was a ben carson story. marco rubio and a so-called mainstream electable candidate for the ge

>> so this is -- this is true when it comes to bernie sanders. my first opportunity to meet bernie sanders is when he attended the national urban league's 2015 conference in ft. lauderdale, florida. but bernie sanders and i did have a telephone conversation about two or three years ago when he called me to talk about a youth employment bill that he was introducing. but certainly there's been a long standing i think relationship with hillary clinton, with bill clinton, and many leaders of cities and many leaders in the urban community and many african-american leaders. so the track record is there. i think with bernie sanders as an acknowledgment that he's been a proponent of progressive causes. but i think he also starts out in a place where people are just getting to know him for the first time. >> in the african-american community, because there is a very small african-american community in his home state of vermont. small african-american community in iowa, where the caucuses took place. but among democrats, more than half expected to vote amo

bernie sanders thinks it's about the economy. what about racism independent of economic unequinequality when i comes to the black community? she's trying to hurt that. other criticisms she had, one at this event thein harlem, withou naming bernie sanders she cast him as a fair-weather friend to african-americans, sort of said you don't just show up not long before the election and hope for support and i thought it was pretty clear who that was for. >> yeah. is anybody -- here's the thing. when i speak to my nieces who are millennials, love bernie sanders. when i speak to my older relatives who are african-american, when i speak to my mom, my aunts, my cousins, hillary clinton, right? so there is a generational gap in the black community that's going to have to be either bridged, you know, bernie is going to have to get older black voters, hillary is going to have to get younger voters, black voters. who's moving the needle? are any of them moving the needle? >> actually, there is a little bit of movement in that bernie sanders is

clinton was leading bernie sanders by 25 points. that is if the polls are to be believed, that lead has since evaporated. so she came out of new hampshire with a resounding loss. she needs a substantial margin of victory here. and based on what you just recorded with some of the exit polling that we have, at least right now, looks like perhaps that the polling showing them running even might be accurate. if she doesn't deliver a substantial margin of victory here, then going into south carolina where she does have a substantial lead, at least the moment it might damage her going into that state, showing that her weaknesses and vulnerabilities are in fact real. >> we shall see. now democrats south carolina week from today. doug, what are you watching in nevada? >> well, i looked at the same entrance polls that i think you and martha and monica did. . looks to me like hillary clinton, potentially has a very, very slight advantage, though it's too close to call. my take is different than month kas. if hillary clinton even ekes out a na

if bernie sanders were to somehow win in texas, if bernie sanders were to somehow win in georgia, and these are not highly plausible, highly expected outcomes, but if he wins michigan, obviously massachusetts or vermont, that is obviously not enough. he has got to win some state that she is expected to win. mark: they are going to try to break his back by winning some states. massachusetts, they have a political consulting group that is based there, and they are going to try to work very hard to keep bernie sanders from winning there, they are not going to try to shut him out, what they are going to try to shut him down. if hillary clinton is called by the justice department about her e-mails, that could spook voters at least. in south carolina, she could go in and win in march in some unexpected places. john: the other way to win, of course, the other way to do it in some unexpected states would be to do it in these battleground states. bernie sanders could do it in ohio, michigan, florida, maybe, maybe you could say that it is a tough road for bernie sanders, no doubt about it. comi

bernie sanders' base is white liberals. iowa and new hampshire are states with an extraordinarily high percentage of white liberals. in fact, there's only one state in the country that has a higher percentage of white liberals than iowa and new hampshire. it's vermont. so although it looks kind of remarkable that hillary clinton couldn't beat him more decisively and she's behind in new hampshire, when you look further out at states with a higher percentage of african-americans and latinos and where the white population is a little more conservative you see in fact the terrain looks pretty good for hillary clinton. that iowa's always been a bad state for the clintons. remember she finished third there in 2008. bill clinton didn't even compete in 1992. so this is not as bad a night for her as it might appear. >> but what it will do is bring in a lot more money. and we've all agreed on that. to sanders. and now i think he can look toward can he take california? that may not be out of the question for him. he may have a hard ti
