for once the navy was the superior power and the navy made a significant contribution to the union victory. it was the confederates had adopted the racing as the policy and the union union or the united states navy that had to chase down but once again almost from the moment it was overtly contracted over they contracted to the prewar numbers by 1870, five years after their world a 52 vessels listed in the navy's register. much of the reduction made a lot of sense. 418 of them were converted have no real value as the oceangoing warships. others were river gunboats and iron clad in the ocean. even so many critics at the time and subsequently solve this as a missed opportunity in the united states. for one thing that navy seemed to retreat only in its size but its abandonment of many of the new technological innovations that characterized by the rowboats and obviously here's one in particular. these were essentially called auxiliary steamers. you see them portrayed as a steamship by the mass in the middle of the back. it's not that they were the obtuse. they were overseas on distant stations

they dominated the navy. the highest guy in the navy was a commodore. the south vietnamese army dominated. they used the river force for transportation. they did not use them for patrol or assault. they were misused, if you will. they fought long and hard. at the end of the war, the war was lost on land. both invasions from north vietnam. the rivers remained secure or almost until the very end. the mekong delta was secure almost until the very end. until saigon fell. we had a strong unions who provided destroyers for coastal bombardment patrol. that was about it for allied support, at least in the rivers. no other questions? >> thank you so much on behalf of all of us at the navy memorial. for your service and all you have done to record the navy history of the conflict in vietnam. >> thank you very much. forecast ioc for the navy variance is fy 21. finally the procurement quantities for mq1 tritan reflect accelerated buys in 2017. in weapons procurement, a net increase of 53 weapons. the navy begins procurement in fy 17 of two new missiles, the joint air-to-ground missile and the long-range antiship missile. a multi-service air launch missile will be used with an ioc of fy 19. in other aircraft weapons the advanced extended range have been refined driving the addition of a technology maturation and risk reduction phase. this missile sl expected to be completed operational testing in early fy 24. in ship board weapons, tomahawk missiles were increased until the session in-line funding starts. the navy's initial buy of long boat hellfire begins in fy 17. overall while weapons procurement decreases over the fit-up this budget invests $11.5 billion over that same time frame to develop new weapons that place adversaries at risk including the next generation land attack weapon, the offensive antisurface weapon increment 2, standard mi
