state of arizona. it's also the first major primary contest in the west. it's important not only in its own terms but also for what arizona might forecast tonight about other big important delegate rich states in the west like, for example, california. on the democratic side, there are 75 delegates and ten super delegates at stake. the polling in the arizona democratic race has been spare infrequent. it does show hillary clinton with a lead in that state. after what happened in michigan this year, sparse polling in big states is newly suspect on the democratic side and nobody is leaning too hard on the polls that have come out of arizona. other than the polling there are reasons why hillary clinton is expected to do well in arizona tonight. one reason is she won the state of arizona in the state of arizona in 2008. she beat him by eight points. she did well in the state with latino voters who are expected to make up about a fifth of the electorate on the democratic side in arizona. the state's primary

, arizona. we are awaiting a press event with donald trump. we anticipated hearing him closer to 2:00 p.m. eastern time. obviously that is not under way quite yet. and perhaps it is because we had seen a lot of his supporters had trouble getting to his event. there one main thoroughfare between phoenix, arizona and fountain hills, arizona. around noon eastern time a group of protesters essentially parked their car in the middle of the highway and then we had seen traffic back up for miles and miles. in fact, it wasn't until about 15 minutes ago that we saw traffic really start to move very, very slowly. but we had seen -- this is actually taped footage. you can see that is where the cars were parked there, is all traffic being stuck for miles and miles. we have seen events happen across the nation. we've also seen some protests erupting in new york city as well. a group of people there coalescing, gathering in central park as well. >> this started out as a peaceful protest around columbus circle

, pardon me, up for grabs in arizona. and you figure that is a heck of a prize when you consider it is a winner take all state. on the other side of this, bernie sanders not too far, down south on the border, a rally on his own, essentially accusing sheriff joe arpaio, historically tough against immigration of being a bully. it's an incredible dynamic being set up in arizona and we are seeing it play out there on the highway en route to a donald trump event. >> another state that's going to be voting on tuesday is utah. and we have seen also a lot of protesters there, very passionate on both sides of the aisle. and that's where we find peter ducey. he joins us now from draper, utah, where we're expecting senator ted cruz, holding a rally there, with senator mike lee. we also know glenn beck was speaking earlier. we presume we also may see mitt romney. what can you tell us, peter? >> i can tell you that the scene you're seeing playing out in arizona right now, we saw something on a smaller scale here in utah last night. th

he spent friday in arizona. he held a big rally at arizona christian university where some of the state's congressional delegation joined him. the cruise campaign made a six-figure ad buy. something about ted cruz' campaign. something about arizona tells him it's worth trying for first. any effort now to come from behind and try to put that state in play might be too late almost structurally. early voting started in late february. it ended last week. it ended on friday. in state's two most populous counties, a majority of voters requested early voting. over 50% have been received and more are in the mail. candidates still competing are competing for a slice of the electorate that is narrowing by the day. many, if not most made up their mind before the candidates had their fully formed thought about the state. in a context like that, is it possible to pull off an arizona upset in either party? joining us now is rebecca sanders, congressional reporter for the arizona republic. thanks for being here. i appreciate y

the second issue in arizona is latino voters. remember, in nevada sanders people said we think we won the latino vote. the question is how would they react in arizona? given the immigration issues, martha, that you've been talking about? and apparently they stuck with hillary clinton here in that environment. that is a critical thing going forward as we look at the western part of the united states, as we get farther into this election cycle. on the republican side, i think that donald trump has got the highest percentage i have seen yet in any state. people talk about whether or not he can break 50% in anything. he has not to this point, for all of the wins never over 50%. he's close. if you throw in votes that would have gone to marco rubio, it seems to me he's in reach of the 50% ceiling. >> if you gets there, there will be a lot of discussion about that. and if he gets late deciders and there is more impact on what happened in brussels, donald trump has a very strong argument going forward. >> yes. arizona is a state in which

arizona is a winner state all. he gets all 58 delegates in the state of arizona. i want to go over to sara murray. you have new information? what where you learning? >> reporter: that's right. arizona was a very big state for donald trump, but as we move to utah this is tougher territory and political experts tell me that trump's brand of politics does not play well in utah. when i spoke to the head of the utah republican party he was cautious about making predictions, but he felt like he gave the edge to ted cruz going into tonight. he said i think utahans are sensitive to a person's style and modesty goes a long way mere. this is a guy who was heckled when he visited one of trump's events last week and when donald trump was speaking about this a couple of days ago he said utah is a state he feels fine about. he's not expecting to win there. so the best they can hope going into utah is keeping ted cruz under that 50% number and getting themselves over that 15% threshold so they can pick up some delegates. >> if he keeps him under the threshold he won't gel auto t

he was down at the border in arizona. he was campaigning hard, but donald trump pulled it off big-time tonight. what does that mean? >> it was so natural, clearly immigration was how he launched his campaign. the law on the southern border largely sup pord by the vast majority of arizonans. if you think about the idea that the establishment endorsements have been going to everybody but trump, the establishment in arizona went to trump. a lot of the party and political leadership in the state was well behind trump. and this is the 58 winner take all delegates. cruz for his part clearly is looking to gain delegates in utah, and if he goes beyond that 50 prsz threshold, he gets all 40. they'll both have good nights. for trump, this is all about accumulating delegates to the 1237 number. >> a big one do you think to governor cruz, though he is expected to potentially take utah? >> i'm sure it is a big concern and disappointment to cruz. but looking at arizona, we also had a record number of individuals coming out to vote. som

arizona one of the winner take all states. in arizona, at the trump rally in tucson. you've got folks behind you, not full, but what's the main message there from the supporters today? >> reporter: poppy, people are still pouring in. there is expected to be a big crowd. earlier donald trump spoke to his core message that anti-immigrant message, that fiery rhetoric that plays well here in arizona. you remember in 2010 the state passed a controversial law that allowed police officers to detain anyone simply because they didn't look like a citizen. trump's message plays well here. he is expected to do well here. he received key endorsements, one from former governor jan brewer and several border patrol unions and one from sheriff joe arpieo. so that message that we should build a wall and make mexico pay is music to the ears of arizona republicans. a taste of what he talked about earlier today. >> this country has a big, big problem with illegal immigration, and all of a sudden we started talking about it, and then you had lots of bad things happening, crime all over the

it was a long day of voting indeed for folks in utah and arizona. imagine waiting hours to cast a ballot. voters expressed frustration saying these lines could have been avoided. the democratic party's website crashed an hour before the start of the party's caucuses. the site includes information such as the addresses for the 90 democratic caucus locations in the state. the website also indicating who is eligible to vote and what documents are needed to do so. that problem was eventually fixed with the website. in arizona now, look at this. lines were several blocks long there. some people were even waiting up to three hours to vote. in fact the turnout was so great that one polling place ran out of ballots. we are told the lines are the result of maricopa county cutting back the number of polling sites to save some cash. the county had 200 polling places in the 2012 election and just 60 this year. that's quite a cut. the county sought the popularity of mail in ballots and the fact they can't vote in primaries would require fewer polling places. tur
