they previewed nike's quarter. foot locker said they were having difficulty in the high end shoe market, basketball shoes specifically, which speaks directly to nike. we knew there would be concern there. their inventory was up, 26%, when foot locker reported. there was concern talked about regarding the quarter. now they're discounting. you're seeing discounts online for nike. that's a massive signal from my perspective. a company that had no issues from a pricing power perspective, you see cracks in the foundation. >> i will extrapolate nike on the inventories level. the sales on the economy wide as that prerecession levels or recessionary levels. they mimic everything else that's going on in the world. >> earnings one of many reasons our next guess says the rally could be in jeopardy. the head of u.s. equity and quantitative strategy for bank of america/merrill lynch. great to have you at the nasdaq. your price target for 2016 year end is one of the lowest on the street, 2200 -- >> 2,000. >> even another. >> my

dollar chipping away at nike sales. nike says sales grew 8% from a year ago but that number would have been 14% higher if you take out how much the sales were dinged by the stronger u.s. dollar. as far as the outlook ahead, nike's bullish about its prospects in china. they gave future orders to investors a look forward. it says that in china, those orders are set to grow 36%. keep in mind, nike has been a high flying stock out performing the s&p 500 this year and over the last 12 months. it was priced for a good quarter. that miss on sales could have an impact on the stock. for "nightly business report," i'm sarah isen. >>> a warm winter drags down sales for g 3 apparel. the seller of calvin cline and levi's saw shares tumble. the company plans to reduce its outer wear offerings next year. g3 issued guidance for the year. it came in below expectations and shares of g3 fell sharply, more than 19%. shares of acorn surged after the drugmakers posted 2015 reports and 2016 guidance. last year the company said it would restat

nike is not a company that has ever sandbagged their earnings reports. they are not going to lower any estimates. when you break this down, it was not a bad record. guidance, in fact, even though it was slightly lower than some estimates, their full guidance for the year is still right in line. any of the currency risk they have, the foreign currency risk, seems to be abating a little bit. any pullback you see in nike, and this was one of them, with the stock down 4%, 5% after earnings, you half to get into this stock for the long haul -- you have to get into this stock for the long haul. i'm going to play may options, may 65/70 call spread. that trades for about one dollar. that's the most i could ever lose on this stock. to the upside, if we go to 70 by may expiration, this could expand to five dollars. 4-to-1.d for risk is i think nike will have the opportunity to break out to new highs. we are looking at a stock that is 125, 130. even though kanye west left nike, went to adidas, i love the stock. julie: thank you so much. more "bloomberg markets" and

a couple of earnings, nike. the company seeing a little bit of a miss in terms of its china number, those revenues expected to be about a billion dollars come in at $982 million. krispy kreme had a little bit of a miss in terms of sales and revenue in a weaker guidance than the market was expecting, about 1.6% increase in same store sales. nearly 3% expected in a slight revenue miss. the other was 87 to 92 cents. those shares were down 5.5%. autozone not moving too much. mike, looks like another buyback program. >> $750 million added to its buyback authorization. autozone is the ultimate perpetual buyback stock. it's been one of the examples people say, look, when you grow earnings and cash flow and buy back stock at the same time, the stock goes vertical which is what it's done. since 1998 buyback authorizations. the market cap today is $24 billion. >> wow. rob cox, what are you going to be watching? >> what am i going to be watching? i love this idea of nike as a company that just i never get to write about be

that would be nike. third quarter profit rising 20%, beating forecasts, but it was the sales number that missed estimates as the strong dollar cut into sales from some of its overseas market. the stock falling sharply, down 6% here in after hours. joining us now on the cnbc news line is the retail analyst at morning star. paul, i've covered nike for our while now. i went through these results thoroughly. where else in retail right now are you seeing 8% sales growth? >> yeah, and i'd also point out we look at the long term and what the brand is doing. that's what we really see as the source of long-term value. this is a solid result and they're growing really, really stro strongly in emerging markets. now, your question is why is it selling off. the futures numbers they reported have been really strong, and sales growth has lagged. two reasons. one is that some of the futures don't line up exactly with their retail and wholesale numbers. the other is that converses is off. converse is not included in futu

>> sure, nike is diversified. china slow down might not have as big of an impact on nike as it would for under armour. but they're diversifdiversified, u.s., they're flipped, so europe and international is about 60%, u.s. is 40%. under armour more geared toward domestic market, 80/20. and so most of the slowdown in athletic has been in the domestic market. so we think that has a bigger impact on under armour than nike. >> thank you. >> susan anderson, she doesn't hate under armour, she's worried about the valuation. you are not. how come? >> yeah, well, i just see much more accelerated both for under armour versus nike, given their smaller size, she talked about footwear, that's a category, under armour is just now getting into. nike already has over 90% share in basketball, almost 40% share in running where as under armour has less than 2% share in basketball and just 5% share in running. the runway for growth is huge for them. especially with the sponsorship, that has really broken them into the basketball categ

i think you have to pick your spots. >> about this nike, at least for nike stock, you're not getting it for the dividend yield. you're talking about a stock that's maybe gotten a 1.1% overall yield for this stock. you'll get it for the growth profile, not the payout. but the walmart we were talking about, you're talking about a 3% dividend yield there. a big underperformer. we know there are secular headwinds for the stock. the majority of analysts have a hold on it. 22 say that so far. maybe walmart becomes one of those compelling cases because it's been such an underperformer for so long. it has this huge brand, the biggest retailer in the world and it still pays a 3% dividend. maybe that's getting some attention, right? >> buyer of walmart here? >> yes. >> yes? >> absolutely. this is one that could do well over the next couple years. because, one, you've got the discount. they've already gone through much of their restructuring. of all those four, that's what i would want to buy. >> i thought the consumer was dead. wouldn't walmart be under major pressure in addition to the secula

nike is none of these things. it's an expensive company. it's best in class. it's fought enormous pricing power. i would make an argument that the chinese consumer slg lg that everybody said is dead, not surprising. the yield results of the last quarter are coming out. their futures are looking better in china. a company that will continue to trade at a premium. that's the kind of name i want to own in this marketplace. i don't care about their technology. in the '80s, one thing they had -- remember the nike, you had a separate pump? that was reebok. >> i don't think reebok existed wack then. >> yes, it was. >> i'll say this is a lawsuit waiting to happen. one of these kids will put on the sneaker, and keep going, have to have it surgically removed. i'm telling you now. six months from now when there's a lawsuit, you can say, play that tape from that guy on thursday's show. from the end of last year, we've seen this in the stock before. we saw it three years ago, two years ago, and last year as well. 26 times forward earnings, you can make an argument it's exp
