i want to get to the breaking news out of brussels. local media say police have arrested a suspect in last year's paris attacks, part of the cell connected to last month's deadly bombings in brussels. joining me from london senior international diplomatic editor nic robertson. what more do we know about these arrests, the exact location and who was captured? we know that it was mohamed abrini, one of the people captured and also a man called -- we don't have a lot of details about him. there is speculation about his role or whereabouts during the brussels attack. that haven't been released on an official basis but with what we know about mohamed abrini, he was in the man who drove with salah abdeslam, one of the planners of the paris attacks, two days before the paris attacks, drove from brussels paris, picked up on cctv camera at a gas

they did it in brussels perhaps more easily because they came from brussels. . but if they were able to essentially relocate the site of this attack within a matter of weeks, days, that's a remarkable level of adaptability. and innovative thinking on their part. and again, this is what worries me. you know, where are these guys currently in the continent. we have the schengen visa-free system. you have asked me for many days and weeks why do they stay so close to the scene of their crime? well it is because they are easily embedded in the communities. they know the area. >> so kimberly, i want to ask for your reaction to this news. first that it was intended target of france and second we're getting word of a movie theater being evacuated. how confident are you in the information that investigators are gleaning from all of these various sources? >> well we did have two top belgian ministers say in the past two day, that while they have had great success rolling up members of the criminell the don't know they have gotten everybody and the alert has to remain high

so close after the paris and brussels attacks. with new information coming out of belgium that some of the planners may have been doing - extensive surveillance on a nuclear scientist. some may have had plans to attack a nuclear facility. it is interesting to hear the white house somewhat downplay the risk. they said in a country like belgium, security is extremely tight around nuclear facilities. they say it reinforces the fact they believe isis would like to get its hands on nuclear material. some experts say they see the broader threat, not being highly enriched uranium, that's used to make nuclear bombs held by two dozen countries. that's been reduced significantly over the last decade. security is also much tighter than it was. they see the real threat as being this lower grade radiological material, kinds used in hospitals and held by academic institutions. that is held in more than 30 countries and sites around the world. some have terrible security. they see that as the likely way that isis could get its hands on some mate

now you mentioned the brussels terror attacks, which is what the brussels and belgian investigators are looking hard. reports all day he could have been, abrini, the hand in the hat, the third suspect at the airport bombing. two suicide bombers blew themselves up and killed all those people and left all those injured and all that carnage. thinking was perhaps abrini was the third person there at the airport. his bomb didn't go off and he fled. we don't know that for a fact. what we do know for a fact, melissa, this is highly significant as well, his dna was found in the bomb factory where those suitcase bombs were created that caused all carnage in brussels. his dna was found in the area in an apartment where the explosives and nails and chemicals were put into those suitcase bombs and where the bombers left from. so circumstantial evidence might point to the fact that abrini might have had a significant role in the brussels attacks as well. we don't know for sure. there were five people all told arrested today and what we know is the, another man is by the name of osama kryem. all day

so, fred to you there in brussels. does this arrest in any way further strengthen the case that authorities have on the other suspects arrested? >> well, it potentially could. one of the big questions will be what exactly are they going to find out from mohamed abrini. seems they are obviously keen to find out what more information he might still have available, or might be willing to share with them. one of the things that was important for them was for them to point out that it was he himself who made this admission that, yes, indeed, he was the man with the hat. that seems to indicate in some way, shape or form he at least seems to be telling the authorities things. at least seems to be giving them some sort of information. maybe for them could indicate he might be willing to share more with them. it's very important for them to have captured this man alive and try and squeeze information out of him, not just about all the things that's happened in the past. not just the logistical web between the paris and brussels

weeks after brussels. he was caught after police requested the public's help in tracking him down. after his arrest, abrini told the press that the attacks that killed 32 in brussels were not the primary plan. in fact the terrorists had originally planned to attack the paris financial district and a catholic association but they felt the net was closing it so they rushed forward their plan. abrini's statement confirms what so many had expected. the arrests in the week before the brussels attacks pushed the killers to action. abrini was tracked down after police surveillance footage of his long walk from the airport into the center of brussels after the attack following his arrest police confronted him with that video after which he admitted he was indeed the one scene accompanying the suicide bombers at the brussels airport. brussels remains on the highest alert. three others have been arrested over the weekend but few believe this is over. the belgian prime minister believes more attacks were likely so da

for more on this, frederik pleitgen in brussels. fred what more can you tell us about this shocking confession? >> reporter: we got a lot of this information, pamela, firsthand from the federal prosecutor's office here in brussels and for them it was very important to make clear that it was abrini himself who made the confession, that he is, in fact, the so-called man in the hat. now, they say what they did is they used facial recognition software first and foremost and then confronted him with that evidence and at some point he said, yes, indeed, that is me. he not only made that convention but also in essence gave a lot of detail as to the route that he took after these attacks took place. of course, were she to remember there is that photo of him and these two other attackers, and then the police here, a couple of days ago, just puts together a series of pictures and videos that steam to sheem to show tha person leaving the airport, going to brussels. saying that's exactly what he did, jumped his jacket and sold his hat as well.

are you confident a brussels-style attack could not happen at a u.s. airport? >> there is always a possibility of an inspired individual or a cell we don't know about to do some harm. goes back to the visible presence and layers of security. >> reporter: while airline passengers are vetted the the moment they purchase a ticket it's unclear if the brussels bombers ever planned to go past security. how do you defend against that? >> it puts it in the category of-- think of the boston marathon bombers. in a sense it's in that category. to do our best to move people as efficiently as possible into the sterile areas of the airport. >> reporter: but all the added security is one factor contributing to long lines at some major u.s. airports. >> i do have concerns about long wait times because it does gather people in addition to being an inconvenience for the traveler, which is no small problem, it does pose a potential problem with respect to large crowds of people. >> reporter: next week, roughly 300 airports will submit detailed vulnerability assessments to the t.s
