new york's the next contest up. 95 delegates up for grabs in new york. the way the delegate rules work there, if donald trump gets the kind of win in new york that the polls are suggesting he's going to get, he could take 85 of those 90 delegates. he could take maybe even more than 85 of those 95. then you go a week later. the mid-atlantic, the northeast. check this out. delaware's a winner-take-all state. looks very good for trump right now. maryland is a state that does a lot by congressional district. but you look at it, trump could take 32 of those 38 in maryland. pennsylvania's a wild card. this is the interesting thing here in pennsylvania. 17 to the statewide winner. then you see this 54. what are these 54? these 54 are unbound delegates. they're men and women who are running for delegates. their names will appear on the ballot. 54 of them will be elected to the republican convention. they will be free agents at the convention. they could vote for anybody they want. that's the good news, maybe, for the stop-trump forces. they say, hey, donald trum

new york is much more than new york city. so let's go upstate to buffalo, new york and bring in tony dokoupil. tony, what are you seeing there? >> reporter: hey, mika, hey joe. i'm outside of a unitaryian church in buffalo. people of any religion can feel welcome. but people of any party are not welcome. it's marked right on the doors. attention voters, this is only open to registered democrats and republicans. and that's been the real story of the day. independents cannot vote. that's about 150,000 people. when they can't vote, that hurts donald trump and bernie sanders. we talked to voters who wanted to vote for both of those candidates and were unable to do so. if trump fails to get over the 50% threshold in this district, he could lose some of the delegates. and the more delegates he loses going into cleveland, the more likely it is we could have a brokered convention, which is upsetting a lot of republican voters. we caught up with two. we asked the first about how he feels about the prospects for a brokered convention.

york. 84% of the vote in new york state. the democratic side has been counted already very, very impressive wins for both donald trump and hillary clinton. let's go over to john king right now because a lot of people thought that hillary clinton would win. a lot of people didn't think she was going to win by this kind of margin. a lot of people thought that donald trump would do exceedingly well, a lot didn't think he was going to win by this kind of impressive margin. >> the margins will impact the delegate math which is what's most important at this stage of the contested convention nomination. this is why hillary clinton was saying in her view that the democratic race in per view mathematically is over. if you look at the map. you see a lot of bernie sanders, but hillary clinton winning in the cities, the smaller cities of rochester and syracuse, then winning huge down here in the new york city area, the bulk of the congressional districts were down here and the bulk of the democratic base is down here in the state. westc

new york city comptroller scott stringer vowed to audit the new york city board of elections. we'll have more on the new york primary after headlines. in brooklyn, a judge has sentenced former nypd officer peter liang to serve no jail time for killing unarmed african american father akai gurley. in 2014, nypd officer peter liang shot 28-year-old gurley in the darkened stairwell of a brooklyn housing project. gurley was walking down the stairs with his girlfriend because the elevator was broken. following the shooting, officer liang first texted his union representative before making a radio call for help. as gurley lay dying. liang had faced up to 15 years in prison on second-degree murder charges. but on tuesday, judge danny chun sentenced him to serve only five years probation and 800 hours of community service. judge chun also made the rare decision to reduce officer liang's verdict from manslaughter charges to the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. following the announcement, akai gurley's aunt, hecicicirtencia petersen, spoke out. >> this is not justice. this

so, you're in new york, let's start with new york. what is the state of play there for donald trump? >> the polling has had donald trump up. but in new york as we'll see in the story elsewhere, up isn't enough any more. he has to win he has to win big. because what happens is, new york will be giving out its district also proportionally within those districts. what it is, is that for donald trump to get back on track after loss in wisconsin, after ted cruz has been cutting in to his lead he will need large win in new york, probably watch if he can get two-thirds of the delegates out of it that will be rebound after falling short this week. the. >> dickerson: the polings have trump up by a lot in new york, also not state that really sets up very well for ted cruz so what does ted cruz do in new york if is there a way he can grab some delegates from trump and for that matter john kasich following a similar strategy? >> there is. if you look at new york the way the campaigns will start looking at new york, it is, district by district, wh
