today, president obama was here bringing with him condolences of an entire nation to grieving family members who lost loved ones in the deadliest mass shooting in american history. we will hear from some of the family members and their loved ones, not just how they died, but how they lived and what made them special. in a moment, an exclusive interview from one of the heroes. a police officer that saved multiple lives that terrible night almost as soon as he got there, ended up rushing in with other officers. today he was reunited with one of the men he saved. we begin with the latest in the investigation. learning more about the shooter's actions during the massacre from text messages he sent his wife while it was going on in the midst of killing. cnn national correspondent jim sciutto joins us. >> reporter: in addition to phone calls made from 911 to the television station, in addition to facebook postings making more threats and searching for coverage and conversation about the shooting, he was also in phone touch with his wife. she tried to call him a number of times, he didn't p

i know how that community grieved, how newtown grieved, how aurora grieved, how charleston grieved and how now orlando is grieving, and quite honestly day annandale day out, how many other communities are affected by the scourge of gun violence. as a member of the senate intelligence committee, i know the challenges we face every day in dealing with the threat of violent terrorists determined to do our nation harm, but if we're going to talk about taking on terrorism, which we need to have a united effort on, shouldn't we take this reasonable step of abiding by the judgment of law enforcement and say if you end up on a terrorist watch list, you should not be able to purchase a firearm. and we have seen in recent days statistics that show that more than 90% of known and suspected terrorists who attempted to buy weapons since 2004 have passed a background check and then have been able to purchase a firearm. to me that is an internal contradiction that by taking action this week we can change around. if you're too dangerous to get on an airplane, aren't you too dangerous as well from bein
