where kristen welker is standing by. kristen, new details to report for us. >> reporter: well, that's right. first of all, just a quick recap of what we just heard from vice president biden, who, by the way, tamron, is still working the room behind me. this is biden being biden. no one engages in rail politics better than him. shook every hand in the room. we did have a chance to ask a few questions, and i asked him about the divisions, the deep divisions we saw yesterday in the democratic party. he down played the disunity, said this was a hard-fought primary battle, this is the tension you will see heading into a convention like this. he also anticipated the democrats are not going to stay home during the fall election, and he said, look, the bottom line is, he is putting his bet on the fact that more sanders supporters are going to come out and pull the lever for secretary clinton. in terms of that new information that i have, tamron, there is going to be a roll call tonight. all 50 states are going to engage in this

kristen welker is live in north carolina. i understand you have new information about the clinton campaign's role in the elimination of the chairwoman here. >> we understand that they did play an integral role in essentially getting her to not gavel in this evening including top advisers. the message from the clinton m campaign to debbie wasserman shultz was essentially you cannot overshadow this convention. earlier today, she was met with jeers when she addressed the florida delegation. so there was real concerns a bt how it would play out tonight if e she did, in fact, gavel in. so ultimately she made the final call, according to the campaign. agreed with that assessment to say i'm not going to gavel in. i'm going to turn things over. and the campaign relieved by that, but i can can tell you there's some consternation why didn't this happen yesterday and why didn't they play a larger role in this as well. bottom line, the focus now within the campaign is turning the page. we saw secretary clinton try to begin that process t

kristen welker has been rufrg this. what's the latest? >> reporter: hey, chris. one of my source has been telling me that it's almost time. john podesta, one of her top advisers, making calls to the vp picks who are for the going to be her actual picks. so you would, buy that measure, guess that the person who is going to be her vp pick is going to get a call very soon as well. now, based on my reporting, based on my phone calls with sources, all signs right now are pointing to tim kaine. he is, of course, the senator from virginia, former governor. he checks all of the boxes. he's got a long resume and happens to speak spanish. that's something that could help secretary clinton in a swing state like florida. he could also help deliver his own state of virginia which, by the way, is critical if you look at the electoral map if secretary clinton loses virginia, she could still win the white house. that's why a state like virginia is so critical. now, some of the drawbacks to tim kaine's progressive not ready to get on board with him, feel as though he's very pro t

kristen welker has been covering the clinton campaign for us. kristen, what can we expect from this meeting between hillary and senate democrats? >> reporter: craig, this meeting is all about cementing party unity heading into the convention in the next several days. it comes after secretary clinton earned that critical endorsement from senator bernie sanders. and it comes of course ahead of the gop convention. i'm told by campaign sources she's going to be here updating her former colleagues on the state of the campaign, her plans for the general election, and she's likely going to talk about a lot of her policy priorities heading into the general, which of course include immigration reforms. she was talking about that earlier. health care reform as well as the minimum wage. and you just heard andrea talk about the fact that this week she has been really focused on how to solve the growing tensions between minority communities and police departments. and that's one of the ways she's been trying to draw sharp distinctions between herself and of

i want to go to our colleague kristen welker. kristen, we know now the fbi is not recommending pressing charges. they transfer their investive findings. a source i spoke to in the campaign said there's a sense of relief this is behind us however comey said clinton and company had a careless regard for classified information. have you heard from your sources about whether or not clinton will address any of this at the rally there today. >> well, we have reached out to multiple sources, thomas, no definitive answer on that yet. but i think it would be unlikely, here's why. the optics of this. it would put the president in a very walk ward position, of course, this is going to be the first joint appearance with secretary clinton and president obama and its aim to rally democrats and rally those sanders supporters who have been hesitant to get on board with secretary clinton. president obama is going to be a character witness for secretary clinton. he's going to argue that, look, she's my former rival and now she's one of my closest

kristen welker is standing by with some reporting for us down -- there she is. a dot of red amid the blue just up off the convention floor. kristen? >> we're just above the new york delegation. they're obviously going to be watching secretary clinton's speech very closely, the former senator from new york. one of her top campaign officials told me just moments ago, she is feeling confident. she's been working on this speech for weeks. her message tonight is going to be stronger together. we've heard her say that on the campaign trail. she'll lay out policy positions in terms of what that means. she'll also draw on some of the themes from her 1996 book, "it takes a village." she'll be drawing also a stark contrast with donald trump. the vision that he laid out for the country this week, she is going to lay out a more optimistic version, much like we heard from president obama last night. now, the challenge for her, she's got to try to turn around some of the negativity numbers. she has some of the highest unfavorable ratings in history. so she's got to get person

nbc's kristen welker has been all over that story. kristen, a lot of people are interested in what the first woman nominee of any party ever is going to do with the first governing decision. it is fair to say, other than elizabeth warren, there are mostly men we are seeing on the short list. many seem like relatively safe moderate picks. what do you hear? >> reporter: okay, here are the top three, we are focusing on. tim kaine for one, senator from virginia, a former governor, someone who has foreign governor experience. he seems to be the front runner right now t. two had hasn't event this past week in virginia. i've spoken with clinton campaign officials who say they feel as though they had good chemistry. this is someone who allowed secretary clinton to shine, quite frankly, during that event. also, we are watching closely tom vilsack who is, of course, the agriculturing is. he also served in an office in iowa. he could deliver that swing state, someone who helps with men. we know secretary clinton has a deficit when it comes to me
