the north carolina brigade marched north. they were at the skirmish at white marsh on the eve of valley forge. he was at valley forge at the winter. or during the winter. he fought at the attack on stony point in the summer of 1779. in the fall of 1779, general washington realized that the situation in the south was growing dire. and he began to dispatch some of his brigades from the continental army to the south. the first he sends is the north carolina brigade. they are going to march beginning in november, 1779. and they arrive notice north carolina around christmastime. and the men are going to or some of the men are going to refuse to march any further. they had not been paid in several months. their clothing was in wretched condition. the north carolina officers act quickly to quell this mutiny and they round these gentlemen up and they take them out in front of the of the brigading and have the brithd gun them down. you can imagine the impact this would have had on the rest of the soldiers. the next day, the brigade is

was voter fraud a problem in north carolina? >> well, the problem with that argument is that i tend to do work based on evidence and data and there was no data available to the legislature showing voter fraud was that kind of consideration that was actually meriting some sort of regulation, or they hadn't uncovered any evidence that voter fraud was a problem to be solved. to the extent there was voter fraud, there is actually evidence that members to have the legislature had engaged in voter fraud and none of that in some ways was regular laid. the stuff they seemed to be going after was sort of the specter, the illusion of voter fraud as opposed to the actual evidence of voter fraud, and that's also another factor that influenced the court's analysis in this case. >> brangham: north carolina isn't the only state around the nation currently changing voting laws. why do you think we're seeing such an uptick in a sudden reformation of voting laws nationwide is this. >> well, i think one of the considerations is a lot of the legisl

garrett: before i recognize the gentleman from north, -- north carolina, the regulators were not monitoring where they were supposed to be and true to form to washington's way of dealings with things at that time, this administration was able to pass through a 2 ,000-paged inspired and crafted legislation called the dodd-frank legislation, 400 regulations. give those failed regulators raises, more authority, bigger, fansier buildings and what was the result of that? well, some jobs were created since 2008. we have had one of the slowest recovery on record. the most recent jobs report shows only 38,000 jobs out of 38 million-plus people was created during the month of may. that was the worst jobs record since 2010 and new startups are at a 20-year low. think about that. if you are waiting to get a new job from a new business, 20 year low. because of that, because dodd-frank did not fix the problem and the 2,000 pages and the more highly paid bureaucrats in washington didn't solve the problem, american families are finding it difficult to find credit and expand their businesses and hire more

north carolina is really a toss up at least. what impact do you think this ruling will have in november? >> i think it is going to have a huge, huge impact. in 2008 when president obama won, he lost on election day. but he actually won during same day registration and early voting. which is why as soon as they got power they began to not only redistrict our state but to take back these provisions that have helped north carolina over come the vestiges of the discrimination and voting. it is not just north carolina. this said something to the entire south. it said something to all of these southern legislatures that want to suppress the vote. because they know right now in the south if you register 30% of the african americans and they join with progressive whites and latino, the solid south is no longer south. states like virginia, north carolina, mississippi, alabama and florida come into play. and if you can breakthrough solid south, that is critical to america. because if you control the 11 southern states you control 22 seats
