i had friends in chinatown who were part of these family associations. for years if you know chinatown and it is made up of a lot of different associations. some of these associations were created way back in the 1800's because there were a lot of discrimination of chinese so had to form own groups called family association to pull the money together because no one would hire them to do work. they had to borrow money from their own people because the banks wouldn't lend money. they wouldn't let them buy property. sound familiar? didn't happen just to chinies but did happen to chineties. the family associations over many decades helped themselves. when i became the mayor 5 years ago the family association said mayor, will you bless us with your presence? for many decades the family associations gave scholarships to our kids and we are proud of that. chinese, we love education and love our kids to succeed. i said i think that is a good idea but have one condition. they said, what is that because we didn't-you are the first chinese america mayor, can you co

the reporter: tom is a speech therapist for boston public schools and works at quincy upper school in chinatown. he's one teacher who is now armed and ready to get into the classroom. he told us today via skype how that's largely due to an unexpected donation. >> a huge shock to find out that your students, it's a wonderful joyful way to start the school year. >> the reporter: that donation came from staples, and pop singer katy perry, through donors choose.org. the web site allows teachers to seek donations for things they need for the classrooms. donors choose gave $437,000 to cover every boston metro west project posted on the web site. the impact -- huge. helping 255 teachers in boston and statewide. 96 schools seeing the benefit. the money will help him classroom computer and even the cost of basic supplies to help low income students who can't afford back to school shopping. >> hour school is a high poverty school, and our kids need all the support they can get. >> the reporter: katy perry got involved after a similar donation a few years ago, saying teachers desperately need our support.

i had friends in chinatown who were part of these family associations. for years if you know chinatown and it is made up of a lot of different associations. some of these associations were created way back in the 1800's because there were a lot of discrimination of chinese so had to form own groups called family association to pull the money together because no one would hire them to do work. they had to borrow money from their own people because the banks wouldn't lend money. they wouldn't let them buy property. sound familiar? didn't happen just to chinies but did happen to chineties. the family associations over many decades helped themselves. when i became the mayor 5 years ago the family association said mayor, will you bless us with your presence? for many decades the family associations gave scholarships to our kids and we are proud of that. chinese, we love education and love our kids to succeed. i said i think that is a good idea but have one condition. they said, what is that because we didn't-you are the first chinese america mayor, can you co
