tracie strahan is there with what we know so far. good morning, trace. >> reporter: darlene, good morning to you. the nypd is confirming several details about this case and the investigation is still under way behind me. they do confirm that 33-year-old ernest brown was shot and killed in his 2007 mercedes. they're on the hunt for a gunman still on the loose. this is a photo of brown given to us from his loved ones. they say he was a father around brooklyn. now, his loved ones showed up here to the scene just a short time ago, so distraught that the mother of one of his eight children had to be carried away back into her vehicle. she actually collapsed upon seeing that 2007 mercedes-benz that he was shot inside around 1:00 this morning. brown wasn't alone inside of that vehicle. he was with a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the torso. brown, however, was transported to interfaith hospital where he was later pronounced dead from several gunshot wounds he sustained here at the scene. now, crime scene detectives have been going up and

tracie strahan is in greenwich greenwichville village with video police want you to see. >> reporter: in neighborhood on edge not only because it happened here but because it's the victim is just 20 years old. this morning police have released surveillance video. he grabbed his victim around 4 ouk in the morning while she was walking by letters, not letting her go and then he sexually assaulted her. police are telling us that he's believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, between 5'5" and 5'8", with a medium build of 140 he has dark medium length hair and was last seen wearing that short sleeve t-shirt as well as jeans and a backpack. that young woman was assaulted so badly that she did have to be taken on-to-a local hospital for treatment. she's said to be recovering after that assault, but of course anyone with any information as to who that person could be is asked to contact the nypd immediately. >> and right off union square and that part of 5th avenue is >> reporter: and we've seen no shortage of people walking by themselves, especially young women. a lot of people surprised t

tracie strahan is there right now. tracie, i know police are trying to sort this out and get ready to present more information. >> reporter: that's right, michael. we received a briefing off camera. that 30-year-old suspect was able to let off 15 rounds after grabbing that police officer's gun in one fell swoop out of his holster. one of those bullets struck that 49-year-old bodega clerk. i want to show all of this that happened. about 1:08 this morning, according to police, there was a 30-year-old suspect that went into one bodega to beg for money or an item. he was kicked out by the store owner or clerk. he then went into a bodega across the street and continued to do the same. that 49-year-old store clerk from the previous store tried to alert the people inside about the suspect. but then he just lost control. a struggle that was caught on videotape. they tried to get control of him. that is when two officers from the 52nd precinct came inside and that suspect, 30-year-old man grabbed the officer's gun, opened fire.

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is in st. george where firefighters are still on the scene. >> not only are those to restore power. at one point they had to cut power to 400 customers in the area. we'll show you the reason why. look at the damage as a result of last night's six alarm fire that left about 42 people homeless. we will show you video now that was into our newsroom showing those searing flames that engulfed seven homes on benzinger avenue. you can see the firefighters trying to make their way into erupted on the second floor. at one point this area covered in smoke because this fire started in a multi family home and quickly spread down the block. a total of seven homes either damaged or destroyed. this morning two of them are in jeopardy of collapsing leaving neighbors to scramble to safety. >> when it was smoke at the house down the street, i saw it. it -- i said smoke. then my cousin, like, ran up to down. >> the 21 people injured, 19 of them were firefighters who suffered some sort of heat exhaustion. of cours

tracie strahan has more. >> reporter: this stretch of the street still blocked off by police. this is where donte gordon lost his life. another man recoveringing from gunshot wounds at a local hospital. there was a report of shots that the 1300 block of college avenue. two men were shot right in front of a building. when the officers arrived they found 17-year-old donte gordon with a gunshot wound to his chest, a 21-year-old shot in the stomach. gordon was pronounced dead. the other man is in critical and stable condition but all of this prompted a very emotional response who as you see from the scene likely knew both of them. the police say they don't point. they don't have any description of the suspect and so far no motive. back to you. >> no motive. thanks so much. >>> a long island man faces murder charges after police say he killed his mother at their suffolk county home. they arrested him. they say he intentionally drowned 63-year-old elizabeth cohen in her own pool. they went to her house after receiving an earlier request for a welfare check. >> the evidence suggest t

nbc's tracy strahan joining us from newark airport with more. tracie? >> reporter: it's never a good morning when you wake up for an early morning flight and greeted by sorry. but that's the status for several passengers going inside here at newark liberty airport trying to check in on the computer kiosks. the faa and delta are confirming, this is all because of a system wide outage. it's grounded flights indefinitely worldwide. exactly what the issue is, they haven't been able to pinpoint it yet. it's led to lengthy lines at airports across the globe. delta says in a statement, this is not impacting flights that are already in the air, which is certainly the good news in in. it has grounded flights and prevented them from taking off. when it's going to happen, we don't know. passengers don't know either. delta said on the website, that the computer outage is happening. they hadn't acknowledged it until about five minutes ago. a lot of passengers showed up at the airport were greeted by the bad news. >> didn't tell us anything. i didn't get an e-mail or

nbc's tracy strahan joins us from newark arm. what do we know at this point? >> not much. that's according to the passengers lining up at this terminal unaware that flights have been grounded. not just nationwide but globally for the nation's number two carrier. we had a chance to go inside of newark liberty airport and people trying to check in weren't able to do so. just the buffering circle and telling them to see a gate agent. delta has been responding to many passenger complaints and they were saying, quote, they know that there is a system outage and hopefully it would be resolved soon. not soon enough for some of the passengers we spoke with at newark liberty airport who were unaware of what was happening until they showed up. >> didn't tell us anything. no e-mail, nothing. it says sorry, an agent needs to check me in. >> you should get an e-mail or something telling me something is wrong. we didn't get anything. >> reporter: this has been going on for a couple of hours now. it's not throughout the early morning hours, a lot of people taking to social media asking d
