in nashville as most of the a country segregation resulted from a very powerful andation. robustly, that created extensive discriminatory housing policy. who got mortgages to live in what place with what kind of federal subsidy. it was in a lot of ways as ws another hiscribed it, a centrifuge easing their movement in that respect. the centrifuge operated not only because they were denied access to those that because the public housing focus on concentrating them in the segregateded neighborhoods. these are policy choices that reinforced the discrimination and other aspects that we have to recognize them as policy choices that were consequential. and schools were not separate from the making of this. they were in fact and we can see this really well in nashville part of the way people thought about making a segregated metropolis. the commission to find a neighborhood around the existence of a school and thought about segregation both in relation to each other so it's not just that segregated schools like the ones they were trying to challenge resulted from housing policies

i would say if you ask any immigrant in nashville overall about how they feel about life in nashville that's why we've grown so much. and why people brought their families later, it seems a welcoming place with a decent quality of life, better cost of living. many latino immigrants we have in nashville come both from their countries of origin, but many of them actually are moving from other part, particularly like california, places where the cost of living is higher or where job opportunities are not as available or perceived to be as available as in nashville. nashville is a place that's been tested maybe like no other places. in 2007 to 2009, we fought an english only referendum. we were the first city of our size that took it to the ballot and to the voters. nashvillians defeated that by sending a message saying that's not who we were or the kind of community we were building. certainly nashville -- i think that the fact that connection americas exists and a non-profit that brings together ten non-profits under one roof that is funded by individuals is testament that nashvillians

i grew up in nashville, tennessee in -- grew up in nashville and figured it would solve the well as well as any other place to appreciate the reality based on homeless families. my childhood was privileged in a prosperous suburb. i knew i might gain no insight into the daily lives of homeless families by living side-by-side, these were people trapped, i had the ultimate privilege of being able to leave whenever i wanted, to parachute into their lives and understand in a few weeks ago's resumption, no one willing to jump into poverty, people fall into it. at least i would be breathing the same air as they were in the same sites in front of my eyes jumping to the same sinkhole. i wanted to understand how this could be happening in the united states, what was done over the last centuries to deal with family homelessness and what is or was not being done today. i started my research in november 2003 at trinity motel. they were easily assembled, rental car keys, swiss army knife, handheld tape recorder, $39.95 specialized tool required. and shock and outrage held. i would spend time putting m
