this is henry kissinger. i do not like our country to be thought of in terms of the cynical use of power. our historical role has been to identify ourselves with the ideals and deepest hopes of mankind. if we lose this asset, temporary successes will be meaningless. well, i would say i rest my case, except my case is lying there, nearly 1,000 pages of it, with a good deal more supporting evidence. but i hope at least i've made you take seriously that, at least in this early period, in the first half of his life roughly, kissinger was no realist. if i had time and wasn't losing the attention of at least one gentleman on the front row -- you got up too early. this is the biggest problem in washington, d.c. everybody is up so early, they just are done by 4:30. henry kissinger. i was the night secretary. all i did was type. >> don't tell him that. >> i was a really good typist. the significance of this -- you've all been through the exhibit and realize the achievements of president nixon. it has been called golden age of american diplomacy with very good reason. any one of the significant achievements that president nixon had during his presidency would have been something that every other president would have been proud to say was his crowning glory and achievement, but nixon had success after success after success. and one of the important reasons for that is the man sitting right here, henry kissinger who, believe it or not, when richard nixon was elected president, he decided he was going to choose a national security adviser. he wanted to have national security, foreign policy defense issues be paramount in his administration but called on someone he had never met before. dr. henry kissinger. would you like to describe what that was like when you got a

and i felt as if he were addressing henry kissinger, and kissinger's role in cambodia, using bombing to enhance american credibility at the negotiating table. so i found, it was a totally fascinating process for me, because i was moderating, non- chronologically, an argument between president obama and the most important, and most controversial foreign policy statesman of the modern era. and so, and so there was that piece. the other piece of this, the other piece is that obama, in some ways, resembles henry kissinger. kissinger, recognizes this to some degree, i think the president recognizes it to some degree. neither man particularly obsesses about human rights as a key issue in the way america organizes its relationship with other countries. >> woodruff: when it comes to cambodia and the bombing during the vietnam war, and connecting that to what's happening? >> in syria, yeah. >> woodruff: right now in syria. kissinger is still defending the decisions that were made during the early part of the nixon administration in the vietnam war. >> and i don't think he'll stop defending th

would you find about kissinger's relationship with kramer? in some ways, this is the most important relationship of all aside from his relationship to nancy. kramer was, as i described in the book, the mess -- the mephistopheles of kissinger's life. this was quite conscious on kramer's part. he was the one that spotted kissinger's talent when they were both rabbits in -- both privates in the army. they hit it off. the relationship was very intense and the subsequent months of war. they were together at the battle of the bulge when they were the on the front line and came under german artillery apartment --

kissinger the first question from the floor? a dr. kissinger, you played remarkable role in stabilizing the world. you left it in a much safer place not least because you made this great contribution by developing detente, it translating common interests into rules and developing detente on many fronts. having left the world a safer place then in the mid-1970's and comparing it with the world now, would you say it is a safer place now, still, or a less safe place? dr. kissinger: the world in which i worked in policy was more dangerous in the sense that if something went wrong, it would be catastrophic. the world now is more complex. term,erefore, in the long more dangerous. because there are means at the disposal of more people that do not have to take sense of the limits that existed then and it could lead to complications. if you look at the couldr problems, you assume that the damage to both sides in a nuclear war would be would upgradet it. but now that so many countries have nuclear weapons, and they get them from a major country
