jodi lockwood's son is senior at dubuque hempstead high school. his literature teacher assigned students to read the book this semester. it's been part of that class's curriculum for the past decade. last week she and several other parents came to the school board requesting the district to reconsider the book be mandated formed a review committee. that group will read the book and consider the parent's request. that committee includes several high school teachers, three hempstead students, librarians and some parents. lockwood talked about why she believes perks of being a wallflower sends mixed messages to students. "we're trying to encourage kids to make healthy choices and then on the other hand we're distributing literature that glorifies unhealthy choices. "we are normalizing behavior that can wreak havoc in their lives.
